Common mistakes to avoid in NYC

Traveling to New York soon? Don’t make these common mistakes!

Eating at chain restaurants

You can get those in anywhere in the US, stick to famous local spots!

Hint if you’re in Times Square check out Gallaghers Steakhouse or The Lambs Club for a fancy sit down.

Los Tacos No. 1, Joe's Pizza Broadway, or Empanada Mama Times Square (40th St) for a quick bite to eat

If you must do fast food, eat at Shake Shack Theater District! It started in Madison Square Park and there are locations all over the city!

Drinking chain coffee

We get it, Starbucks or Dunkin is the coffee you know, but there are so many good local coffee shops!

My favorites are:

Variety Coffee Roasters

Felix Roasting Co.

Hungry Ghost Coffee

787 Coffee Co.

Planning too much in a day

Stick to one area of a city per day, max 2 areas! While the distance isn’t far, it can take a long time to get from place to place! You don’t want to overpack an itinerary with too many things to do as it’s easy to have delays getting around the city or things taking a bit longer!

Plan to walk alot and leave some room for spontaneity!

... Read moreWhen planning your visit to New York City, avoiding common travel mistakes can significantly enhance your experience. First, skip the chain restaurants. While spots like Shake Shack are iconic, local eateries offer a unique culinary adventure that chain restaurants just can't match. Check out popular local favorites like Gallaghers Steakhouse, Joe's Pizza, and Empanada Mama for authentic cuisine that showcases NYC's diverse food scene. Moreover, steer clear of chain coffee shops. Instead of relying on familiar brands like Starbucks, explore local cafes like Variety Coffee Roasters or Felix Roasting Co. These coffee spots often serve artisanal brews that highlight the city's vibrant coffee culture. Another common error is cramming too many activities into one day. New York City is vast and full of attractions, so it's essential to pace yourself. Focus on either one or two neighborhoods each day, allowing time for exploration and unexpected discoveries. Remember to leave some space for spontaneity, letting the city surprise you with its hidden gems. In addition, it's crucial to consider transportation. The city's public transit system is extensive but can be time-consuming as you navigate between locations. Soak in the atmosphere and enjoy walking through neighborhoods, as this often reveals the city’s charm that you might miss while traveling in a rush. Lastly, engage with local culture and people. Utilize hashtags like #travelnyc or #nyctips to connect with fellow travelers and locals for additional tips that are not found in traditional guides. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a memorable and authentic experience in the heart of NYC.
