fall day trips from NYC: Sleepy Hollow
One of my favorite places to visit in the fall from New York is the magical little town of Sleepy Hollow just north of the city in the Hudson Valley.
During the fall is the best time to visit as this is a true Halloween town and it really leans into its ties to the legendary tale of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving!
Which brings me to what there is to do here!
First, visit the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery - this is the setting of the legendary tale and where the author, Washington Irving is actually buried! You’ll also want to see the old stone Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow here too, it’s from the 1600s!
Be sure to wander downtown, I love Beekman Street and recommend eating pizza at Beekman Ale House!
You’ll also spot alot of fun festive decor on all the stores around here!
You can also take a tour of the historic Philipsburg Manor
To get here: From Grand Central Terminal take the Metro-North Railroad (Hudson Line) to Philipse Manor station station, there’s an express train to Tarrytown that gets you up here in 35 minutes, then its just one more stop to Phillipse Manor which is in Sleepy Hollow!

If you're planning a fall day trip from New York City, Sleepy Hollow is a perfect destination filled with both history and Halloween spirit. Beyond the well-known Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving—the author of the iconic 'Legend of Sleepy Hollow'—rests, the town offers rich colonial history and seasonal festivities that truly bring the haunting tale to life. Start your visit with a stroll through the Old Dutch Church, dating back to the 1600s, famous for its traditional architecture and links to Irving’s story. Downtown Sleepy Hollow features Beekman Street, a charming area packed with shops and restaurants, including the popular Beekman Ale House where you can enjoy delicious pizza in a cozy setting accented with fall decor. Don't miss a tour of Philipsburg Manor, an 18th-century historic site that offers insights into the region’s colonial era with interactive exhibits and beautiful grounds. For ease of access, take the Metro-North Railroad Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal. Express trains reach Tarrytown in 35 minutes, and the next stop is Philipse Manor, right in Sleepy Hollow, making it an effortless and scenic journey. Fall is truly the best time to visit Sleepy Hollow, as the town embraces its Halloween heritage with themed events, decorations, and community celebrations, perfect for families, history buffs, and anyone looking to soak up seasonal charm just outside NYC.
