Coney Island is where to be on New Year’s Day!

Tourists flock to Times Square, but New Yorkers? They go to Coney Island for the annual polar plunge on New Year’s Day!

This is one of the most fun days of the year (even if it is the first day of the year) to be at Coney Island!

Each year, thousands of people gather to Coney Island Beach and the famous Riegelmann Boardwalk to ring in the new year with a polar plunge!

What’s awesome is that this event isn’t just a fun party, it’s actually a fundraiser for the local Coney Island community and non profits!

I love this event, people get all dressed up, they energy is high, and everyone is having a blast! You even get an I Did It Certificate if you plunge!

Note you have to register to participate (it’s a free event but donations are welcome!)

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about the legendary Coney Island Polar Plunge on New Year's Day, right? But let me tell you, it's so much more than just a quick dip in the freezing Atlantic. It's an absolute blast and truly one of the most unforgettable ways to kick off your new year in NYC! First off, let's talk about the vibe. The energy on Coney Island Beach that day is infectious! Thousands gather, not just to plunge, but to cheer each other on, all for a great cause – supporting local non-profits. I distinctly remember seeing people in the most incredible outfits. Forget your average swimsuit! This is where 'polar plunge costume ideas' really come to life. I saw everything from full-on polar bear costumes (so fitting!), to hilarious animal onesies like bright green frogs and even a cow. Some people went all out with superhero capes, while others sported wacky hats and sparkly accessories. My tip? Pick something that makes you laugh and is easy to slip off once you hit the water. And trust me, having a fun costume makes getting that 'DID IT!' certificate photo even more epic! If you're thinking of joining next year, here’s my personal lowdown on what to expect and how to prepare for the 'coney island new years' tradition. Registration is a must, even though the event itself is free. They do encourage donations, which is awesome because it directly benefits the community. On the day, arrive early! The crowds are huge, and the atmosphere on the Riegelmann Boardwalk is electric. You'll want to soak it all in before you, well, soak in the ocean! Preparation is key for a comfortable (as comfortable as plunging into icy water can be!) experience. Layer up with warm clothes you can easily shed, and have a big, fluffy towel waiting for you. I also bring a spare pair of shoes and a thermos with a hot drink – trust me, you'll crave it after! Safety is important too; don't stay in the water too long, and pay attention to the volunteers. It's a quick dip, not a swim meet! The moment you run into that water, there’s this incredible rush. It’s cold, yes, but the adrenaline and the cheers from the crowd make it exhilarating. When you emerge, shaking and laughing, clutching your 'DID IT!' certificate, you feel like you've conquered the world. It’s a fantastic feeling of accomplishment and camaraderie. After the plunge, Coney Island still has a special charm. You can take a brisk walk along the boardwalk, maybe grab some hot food if any vendors are open (check in advance!), and just revel in the unique start to the New Year. It's a truly practical and rich experience that offers so much more than just a dip – it's a testament to community spirit and personal bravery. So, if you're looking for an unforgettable New Year's Day, I can't recommend the Coney Island Polar Plunge enough!
