In 1694, during the Qing Dynasty, the Kangxi Emperor built the mansion to give it to his fourth son, Prince Injen (later Yongzhen Emperor). When Prince Injen was enthroned as Yongzhen Emperor in 1722, he went to live in the Forbidden City, and the mansion was reinstated as Yonghe Palace in 1722. 1774 After the death of the Yongzhen Emperor, the Qianlong Emperor (his son) turned this palace into a Mahayana Buddhist temple (Geluk sect, or Yellow Hat) to serve as a ruling and religious center for Tibetans and Mongolians.
