Hot Dog Spot in Chicago

Am I the only one who goes at Home Depot, know that they have a hotdog stand and just passed by it? Not today, we decided to get their wagyu beef hot dog.

RATING

Taste: 8/10, it was pretty tasty!!

Price: 5/10, it makes sense because it’s wagyu, but at the same time I feel like the pricing could be less than $10.

Any hot dog place recommendation?

... Read moreAfter trying that amazing Wagyu hot dog at Home Depot's Fixin' Franks – seriously, who knew?! – it got me thinking about all the other incredible hot dog experiences out there. My tastebuds are still buzzing from that 8/10 rating! You asked for recommendations, and I've got a few thoughts on where to find your next great bite, especially if you're exploring beyond the unexpected delight of a 100% American Wagyu Beef hot dog. First off, if you're in Chicago and craving a classic, you absolutely have to try a proper Chicago-style hot dog. It's an institution for a reason! We're talking an all-beef frank on a poppy seed bun, topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt. It's a flavor explosion – savory, sweet, spicy, and tangy, all in one bite. You won't find ketchup on a true Chicago dog, so don't even ask! Places like Portillo's or Superdawg are iconic, and they often claim to have "Chicago's Best Hot Dog" for a reason. They really embody that vibrant, vintage-style hot dog stand feel that makes the experience even better. But the hot dog world is so much bigger than just Chicago! If you're looking for different vibes, consider these: New York-style: Often simpler, with just mustard and sauerkraut or onions in a rich, red sauce. Think street cart vendors and quick, satisfying bites. Coney Island-style: Originating from Michigan (not Coney Island, surprisingly!), these feature a savory, beanless chili, chopped raw onions, and yellow mustard. It’s messy, comforting, and incredibly flavorful. Seattle-style: A surprisingly delicious combo of a grilled hot dog split and filled with cream cheese, often topped with grilled onions and various condiments. Don't knock it 'til you try it! Kansas City-style: This one features a hot dog topped with sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese. A bit unconventional, but delicious. Finding a great hot dog isn't just about the toppings, though. The quality of the frank itself makes a huge difference. That 100% American Wagyu Beef hot dog from Fixin' Franks was a game-changer for me, proving that a gourmet approach can elevate even the simplest of foods. When you're searching, look for places that grill their dogs to perfection, getting that slight char and snap. Also, don't underestimate the bun – a fresh, soft bun that holds up to all those delicious toppings is key. Next time you're out and about, maybe even at a Home Depot like I was, keep an eye out for those hidden gems. You never know where you'll find your next favorite hot dog, whether it's a gourmet Wagyu creation or a classic Chicago-style masterpiece with mustard, relish, chopped onions, tomato slices, and pickle spears. Happy hot dog hunting!
