School's Scholastic Book Fair

When my kid got off the school bus yesterday, I told him we would go to school for the book fair. When we got home, he went straight to his clothes drawer and got changed. He put his other backpack on and didn't take his shoes off. He was ready to return to school to get the books. 😅 We received the book brochure last week and I asked him which books he wanted to buy. Of course, he picked Minecraft. Unfortunately, the ones he liked weren't there yesterday. I might have to order them online. However, the happiness he felt when he saw the Lego books was priceless. He just wanted the toy, though. 😅

I remember the times when my elementary teachers handed me a paper with lists of books that we could purchase. I'd love to have them all but my parents couldn't afford them. But one thing that I really wanted to get was a dictionary. I think I persuaded my parents to buy me a Bisaya-English dictionary instead of storybooks. I never had children's storybooks. I had dictionaries. I loved reading them back then. I used to write new words that I learned on a piece of paper. This might be the reason why I'm good at spelling. Ahahaha! I still remember how I hated my sister for losing it when she borrowed it one day. I was hesitant to lend it cos I was attached to that dictionary. I read that every day. I could have used it to teach Sven my dialect cos I'm certain I would still have it. I'm great at keeping stuff. I still have my deceased uncle's (he died when I was 2) pocket dictionary published in the 1950s. I also have his English textbook that I have read over and over again over the years. 😅 I used to think he was a reader and I got my love of reading from him.

It was me who wanted the Pokemon Phonics. 😅 It would be cool to practice reading with Sven with some Pokemon stories. I remember learning how to read by reading my school textbooks. As I said I never had storybooks. Our elementary school didn't have a library either. Books were scarce in my time but it didn't hinder me from loving to read. I remember going home from school, practicing reading loudly. According to my mother, my father taught me how to read. He did a great job! He might be so patient to practice reading with me. I remember him bringing old Reader's Digest (80s issue) publications in high school. He asked them from someone who was about to throw them away. He gave them to me and I was ecstatic. I still have them and I will never get rid of them. That's how I discovered Reader's Digest and it became my fave publication.

I think my way of healing my inner child is through giving my kid's needs and wants. 😅

... Read moreAttending the Scholastic Book Fair this year reminded me just how powerful and precious these events are for children and parents alike. It’s not just about buying books or toys; it’s about igniting a lifelong passion for reading and learning. My child’s excitement over the Minecraft-themed books and Lego sets made me realize how today’s fairs blend education with popular interests, making reading more appealing to young minds. Looking back, I remember an era when books were scarce, and my only treasured items were a Bisaya-English dictionary and some old Reader’s Digest issues. Those humble beginnings shaped my spelling skills and deep appreciation for language, and it’s touching to share this legacy with my child. The fact that he was so eager to return to school just to browse the Scholastic collection made me reflect on the joy of discovery that book fairs ignite. Moreover, books like Pokemon Phonics or Minecraft activity guides add an interactive layer that helps kids practice reading with fun themes. From personal experience, I know that incorporating playful learning tools encourages children to build reading confidence and fluency naturally. It’s a reminder that even when libraries or storybooks were unavailable during my elementary years, the simple act of reading aloud with family was invaluable. In addition, Scholastic book fairs foster family moments and healing for parents who want to provide their kids with opportunities they themselves may have missed. This shared experience not only supports children’s education but also nurtures loving memories between generations. For families planning to visit upcoming book fairs, I’d suggest engaging children by letting them explore their favorite genres or themes such as Minecraft, Lego, or phonics-based books, as these spark motivation. Don’t hesitate to combine online orders with in-person browsing to ensure access to the books your child truly desires. Ultimately, Scholastic book fairs offer much more than books—they offer connection, inspiration, and the joy of learning that lasts a lifetime.
