... Read moreMy daughter, Harper Zilmer, has always had a special connection to music. From humming along to songs in the car to putting on mini-concerts in our living room, her passion for singing has always been clear. It's a joy to watch her light up when she sings, even if it's just for us. So, when the opportunity arose for her to perform her very first solo in front of an audience, it was a moment filled with both immense excitement for her potential and, for Harper, incredible nerves. We knew this would be a significant milestone, a true test of her courage. All of last night and this morning leading up to the performance, she was absolutely convinced she would mess up. "What if I can't hit the note?" she'd whisper, her eyes wide with worry. We tried to reassure her, but the anxiety was palpable. She kept coming up with different excuses not to go on, citing everything from a sore throat to suddenly forgetting the lyrics. But I knew deep down it wasn't about avoiding the stage; it was about the fear of not meeting her own high expectations, the anxiety of wanting to be perfect. As her mom, it broke my heart to see her so anxious, but I also knew this was a moment she needed to face head-on. I kept reminding her, "It's not about being perfect, honey. It's about trying your best, sharing your beautiful voice, and being proud you got up there." We practiced deep breaths together, and I told her to just focus on having fun. The moment finally arrived, and she was assigned to be the first one to go. My heart pounded right along with hers as she walked to the microphone. She was so nervous she actually missed her cue to start, a little hiccup that only added to the raw, honest beauty of the moment. You could see her take a deep breath, gather herself, and then, she started. Slowly, tentatively at first, but with every note, you could literally see her getting more comfortable. Her voice, which had been shaky moments before, grew stronger, clearer, filling the room with so much emotion. When she got to the part she was most nervous about – a a slightly challenging high note she’d practiced endlessly – she closed her eyes for a second, pushed through, and absolutely nailed it! The audience gave a warm round of applause, and her face lit up. Watching her finish, a huge smile spreading across her face, was an indescribable feeling. The relief, the pride, the sheer joy – it was all there. She did it! Sooo proud of her doesn't even begin to cover it. My partner even bet I'd tear up, and he was absolutely right. It wasn't just about the singing; it was about her incredible courage, her resilience, and her willingness to push past her fears. This debut wasn't just a performance; it was a huge step in Harper's journey of self-discovery and confidence. It reminds me how incredibly important it is to encourage our kids to pursue their passions, even when the path seems daunting. Seeing my happy girl shine like that is truly the greatest reward, and I can't wait to see where her musical talents take her next, black hair flowing as she embraces every new challenge and adventure with that brave, artistic spirit. These are the moments we cherish as a family, witnessing her grow and conquer.
