Building community online
Like many people right now, I am having a hard time making close friends as an adult. Like many people with autism or ADHD, I have always had a difficult time truly connecting with other people, even family.
I am an ambivert, so many think that I'm good at socializing. The truth is I've learned to mask, people-please, and mirror others to the point that most of my friendships lack any form of intimacy.
The internet has been a lifesaver! During the quarantine, I joined groups for women with ADHD, autism, and depression. These women have made me laugh through tears, laugh until I was in tears, and process grief. Where I would face judgment from IRL people, I would receive heartfelt advice online.
