While Emma and Sylvie’s relationship is depicted as idealistic, the novel raises questions about communication and the sacrifices made for family. Ultimately, The Rom-Commers is about taking risks, finding one’s voice, and the unexpected paths to love and self-discovery.

My thoughts: Charlie had a valid reason to be closed off, which was explored a bit. Emma’s cautious nature was relatable, but her character’s sudden risk-taking felt inconsistent, like talking to her favorite author at a coffee shop. Charlie’s writer’s block and tough exterior contrasted with his social proficiency in the industry, which seemed contradictory. Emma’s relationship with her sister Sylvie seemed too idealistic. Emma’s decade-long sacrifice without voicing her struggles, and the lack of communication about their life plans, felt unrealistic. As an only child, I can’t fully grasp sibling dynamics, but the sudden changes and lack of dialogue about major life decisions were hard to believe. I give this book 2 stars because it idealizes poor communication yet offers a happy ending.
