Easy Homemade Dog Treats 🐶

* 1 cup pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie mix.. 100% PURE PUMPKIN

* 1/3 cup of peanut butter, with no xylitol (natural ingredients)

* 2 large eggs

* 2 cups of whole wheat flour, plus some for rolling out your dough

* cookie cutter, doesn’t matter the shape

Bake Temperature: 350F

Bake Time: 25-30 minutes

Pan: Baking sheet with parchment paper

1. Preheat oven to 350F.

2. In a bowl, pour your pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and your two eggs. Mix together until everything is combined.

3. Add your flour and fold into wet ingredients.

4. Lightly flour your surface.

5. Place treat dough onto your floured surface.

6. Using a rolling pin, roll your dough out as if you were making cut out cookies. It should be not too thin, but not too thick.

7. Now take your shaped cookie cutter and cut out your treats. You will need to do this multiple times, rolling out dough multiple times to use majority of the treat dough.

8. Place your treats on your baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

9. Bake at 350F for 25-30 minutes.

10. Once the treats are done, take them out and let them cool completely, maybe 1 hour.

11. Once cooled, give one to your fur friend… he/she will LOVEEE THEM.

12. To store, place in an air tight container for up to a week.

... Read moreWhen I first started baking for my canine companion, I quickly discovered that not all ingredients are created equal, especially when it comes to dog treats. It’s a wonderful feeling to know exactly what goes into your pet's snacks, avoiding questionable additives and preservatives often found in store-bought options. Let's talk about the star ingredient: 100% pure pumpkin puree. This isn't just a tasty addition; it's a nutritional powerhouse for dogs! I always make sure to grab a can that explicitly states '100% pure pumpkin' and steer clear of 'pumpkin pie filling.' The pie filling typically contains added sugars, spices like nutmeg (which can be toxic to dogs), and other ingredients not suitable for our furry friends. Pure pumpkin is fantastic for digestive health, offering a generous dose of fiber that can help with both constipation and diarrhea. It's also packed with essential vitamins like A, C, and E, plus potassium and iron, boosting their immune system and overall well-being. I often keep a can in my pantry, not just for treats, but also as a quick remedy for an upset tummy – just a spoonful mixed into their food can work wonders! Another crucial ingredient, and one that requires careful attention, is peanut butter. While most dogs absolutely adore peanut butter, there's a hidden danger many pet parents aren't aware of: xylitol. I remember feeling quite alarmed when I first learned about this! Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is perfectly safe for humans, but it is highly toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can cause a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and can lead to liver failure, and in severe cases, even death. This is why it's incredibly important to always, always check the ingredient label of any peanut butter you buy for your dog. Many natural peanut butter brands are xylitol-free, typically containing just peanuts and maybe a little salt. But it’s always best to be vigilant and confirm before you let your pup enjoy it. The peace of mind knowing I’m giving them a safe, wholesome treat is priceless. Finding these quality ingredients is usually quite straightforward. For pure pumpkin puree, most major grocery stores, like Kroger, Walmart, or Target, will carry it in their baking aisle. You can usually find store brands that are just as good as national brands, as long as the label confirms it’s 100% pure pumpkin. For peanut butter, look for those natural varieties in the same aisle, carefully scanning the ingredients list for xylitol. It’s empowering to be able to source these simple, natural ingredients and turn them into something your dog will absolutely love. Beyond just following the recipe, don't be afraid to get a little creative with your dog treats! Once you're comfortable with the basic recipe, you could experiment with adding other dog-safe ingredients like a small amount of mashed banana, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or even some finely grated carrot for an extra nutritional boost. Just be sure to always research any new ingredients to confirm they are safe for canine consumption. These homemade treats are not only a wholesome snack but also a fantastic way to bond with your pet. Seeing their happy tail wags when they get one of my homemade creations makes all the effort absolutely worth it!
