... Read moreLiving with a Psychiatric Service Dog like Goliath has truly transformed my life in so many positive ways. It’s more than just having a pet; it’s like having a constant, furry companion who’s always got your back, especially on challenging days. When I first considered a PSD, I had no idea how deeply a bond could form, or how invaluable their assistance could be.
Goliath, my amazing brown psychiatric service dog, isn't just fluffy and cute; he's incredibly intelligent and highly trained. His 'Boop' trick, for instance, isn't just adorable; it's a gentle yet firm reminder to take my medication, a small but critical task that often gets overlooked during stressful moments. And his 'on me' command for deep pressure therapy? It’s a game-changer. When anxiety or sensory overload hits, his comforting weight helps ground me, providing a sense of security and calm that's truly hard to describe. It's an immediate, physical comfort that helps regulate my nervous system.
Beyond his official duties, Goliath brings so much joy and routine to my life. Our walks, even on rainy days like the one we had recently, are highlights. You might have seen photos of him sporting his green hooded raincoat – he looks so dapper! He truly doesn't mind the drizzle, especially if it means he gets to indulge in his secondary hobby: professional grass rolling. It’s hilarious to watch; he finds the perfect patch of grass and just goes for it, wiggling with pure delight. It always brings a smile to my face, no matter what kind of day I'm having.
One of the less obvious but equally important aspects of having Goliath is the structure he brings. Knowing I need to walk him, feed him, and engage with him helps me stay present and active, even when I might not feel up to it. His unwavering presence and unconditional love are a powerful motivator. He’s also a fantastic greeter; if someone’s at the door, he’s there, tail wagging. If not, he patiently waits by my side, demonstrating his incredible focus and training.
People often ask about the training process. It’s extensive and requires a lot of dedication, both from the dog and the handler. Building that trust and understanding each other's cues takes time, patience, and a lot of positive reinforcement – and yes, some delicious duck-flavored treats for Goliath! But every moment invested is worth it. He knows 'high five' and 'shake' too, which are wonderful for breaking the ice and showing off his cleverness.
Having Goliath has also opened up conversations about mental health. He’s a visible reminder that support comes in many forms, and there’s no shame in needing a little extra help. He’s not just a service animal; he’s a beloved family member, a best friend, and an incredible partner in navigating life's ups and downs. I honestly can't imagine my life without my sweet Goliath by my side.
