Xo Kitty parallels TATBILB
Okay, fellow #TATBILB and #XOKitty fans, can we talk? When I started watching XO, Kitty, I genuinely wasn't prepared for the sheer amount of parallels and connections to the original To All The Boys I've Loved Before series. Seriously, I was not ready for the parallels!!! It’s not just a spin-off; it feels like a beautiful, extended universe that truly enriches Kitty’s story, while still nodding lovingly to Lara Jean’s. First off, the most obvious connection: Kitty Song-Covey herself! We watched her grow up as Lara Jean’s spunky, match-making younger sister, and now she’s stepping into her own spotlight. Just like Lara Jean, Kitty’s journey is kicked off by a romantic grand gesture, albeit one she initiates herself by moving halfway across the world to reunite with her long-distance boyfriend, Dae. This immediately echoes Lara Jean’s accidental love letters and the fake-dating trope that started it all. Both sisters are navigating the tumultuous waters of first love, albeit with very different levels of confidence! Then there's the theme of cultural identity and navigating new environments. Lara Jean grappled with her Korean heritage and traditions, especially through her relationship with Peter and her family. Kitty takes this a step further by immersing herself entirely in Korean culture, attending a boarding school in Seoul. She faces language barriers, social hierarchies, and the challenge of understanding a new way of life, much like Lara Jean had to reconcile her American upbringing with her Korean roots. These experiences really highlight the importance of understanding where you come from and how it shapes who you are. And can we talk about the love triangles? Because, of course, there’s a love triangle! Just when Kitty thought she had it all figured out with Dae, along comes Min Ho, adding a delicious layer of romantic confusion. This is a classic TATBILB trope, reminding us of Lara Jean’s own struggles between Peter, Josh, John Ambrose, and even Gen. It’s comforting to see that certain elements of the Covey sisters’ romantic lives are simply destined to be complicated and thoroughly entertaining! Family remains a central pillar, too. Even though Margot and Lara Jean aren’t physically present, their influence and Kitty's memories of her mother are woven throughout the series. The show beautifully explores Kitty's efforts to connect with her late mother's past in Korea, adding a poignant layer to her adventure. It mirrors Lara Jean’s deep connection with her family and her own journey of grief and remembrance. In essence, XO, Kitty successfully captures the heartwarming essence, the romantic angst, and the familial love that made TATBILB such a beloved series, while giving Kitty her own unique voice and a vibrant KDrama twist. It’s more than just a spin-off; it’s a continuation of the Covey magic, reminding us that love, family, and self-discovery are universal, no matter where in the world you find yourself.
