You can pet the dogs in BOTW & TOTK
When I first started my Hyrule adventure in Breath of the Wild, and later Tears of the Kingdom, one of my biggest questions was, 'Can I pet the dogs?!' It’s such a simple joy in real life, and I always hope for animal interactions in games. While it's not a traditional 'press X to pet' animation like some other games, I was absolutely thrilled to discover that you can indeed build a bond with the canine companions scattered across Hyrule, and it’s incredibly rewarding! So, how do you go about this magical dog petting experience? It all comes down to food! These loyal creatures love a good meal. My personal go-to items are any type of raw meat, like Raw Meat or Raw Prime Meat, but I’ve also had success with apples or other fruits and even mushrooms if I'm really low on meat. You’ll want to drop about 3-5 pieces of food right in front of them. Watch their reactions – they’ll usually gobble it up with enthusiasm. After they’ve had their fill, you'll notice a distinct change in their behavior. Their tails will start wagging vigorously, and they might even bark happily and follow you around. That’s your sign of a successful 'dog petting' session! This isn't just for warm fuzzy feelings, either. Befriended dogs are more than just cute companions; they can actually be super helpful! I remember one time, after feeding a dog near a stable, it started leading me away from the path. Curious, I followed, and sure enough, it led me straight to a hidden treasure chest I would have otherwise completely missed. It was such a cool moment! They often lead you to buried rupees, rare items, or even point out nearby enemies or points of interest. It's a subtle but wonderful gameplay mechanic that adds so much to the world. You can find these wonderful pups all over Hyrule. Stables are a fantastic place to start, as almost every stable has at least one dog hanging around. You’ll also spot them in various villages like Hateno Village, Lurelin Village, and even at some enemy camps (though you might need to clear out the enemies first!). Spending some time with these virtual pets really enhances the feeling of living in Hyrule. It makes the world feel more alive and gives you a little loyal friend to share your journey with, even if just for a short while. So next time you see a dog, don't just walk by – share a snack and enjoy the subtle but heartwarming connection!
