Are foldable smartphones worth it?

I'm thinking mainly of the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Pixel Fold. They seem to be much more expensive than ""normal phones"" and I'm curious if the fold mechanisms wear out after a year or do when the warranty is no longer valid.

Will we ever get a fordable screen phone that is actually usable? That doesn't require a screen replacement if You look at it wrong or god forbid touch it too much? Or will this just stay a gimmick for people with more money than brains?
