$216 for a PILLOW at NYU Bookstore

Popped into the NYU bookstore today for the first time since graduation and whoa prices have gone full-on sticker shock. Saw a basic pillow with the NYU logo, just a simple blue-and-white design, no fancy embroidery or anything and it was $216. I literally did a double-take like, “Is this a typo? Did they forget a decimal?”

Flashback to 2020 when I first started school, bookstore stuff was pricey, but $200+ for a pillow? That’s wild. Maybe it’s lined with actual gold thread? Am I wrong to think $200+ for a dorm pillow is bonkers, or is this the new normal?

... Read moreOkay, I totally get where you're coming from about that $216 NYU pillow! My own experience with college bookstore prices has been a roller coaster, but that's a whole new level of sticker shock. It really makes you wonder, are campus merchandise prices skyrocketing everywhere, or is NYU just in a league of its own? I've often thought about why college merch, especially items like a decorative pillow from the 'Collegiate Collection', carries such a hefty price tag. Part of it has to be the brand name itself – NYU has a global reputation, and you're paying for that prestige, even on a simple blue-and-white design. Then there's the exclusivity; you can’t just get these items anywhere. Plus, these NYU bookstore operations have overheads, licensing fees for logos, and often contribute to university funds, which theoretically justifies some markup. But $216 for a pillow still feels... excessive. For students looking to deck out their dorms or show school spirit without breaking the bank, there are definitely savvier ways. Instead of splurging on an official NYU pillow, consider DIY options! You could get a plain blue or purple pillow and iron on an NYU patch. Or check out local thrift stores near campus – sometimes you can find gently used NYU goods. Keep an eye out for sales, especially during orientation or graduation periods, when NYU merchandise might be discounted. It's often the best time to snag a deal on a new water bottle or notebook. It's not just pillows, though. The NYU bookstore also carries a variety of other items. I've seen everything from white mugs and water bottles to notebooks and apparel. Some of the most charming NYU merchandise features New York City landmarks alongside the NYU logo – those are often my personal favorites because they blend school pride with the unique vibe of studying in NYC. But even these can come with a premium price. It really makes you think about what's worth the splurge and what's not, especially when considering the overall NYU furniture cost for your dorm room. For anyone starting at NYU or heading to college, my biggest advice is to budget for your essentials first. Dorm furniture and decor can add up quickly. Think about borrowing items, buying second-hand, or waiting for campus giveaways. If you really want an NYU logo item, maybe start with something smaller like a cheap mug or a keychain, rather than diving straight into a high-cost NYU pillow. It's all about balancing school spirit with financial common sense. It’s fascinating how the perceived value of an item can skyrocket just by adding a university logo. I mean, is that Collegiate Collection pillow truly made with premium materials that justify that NYU furniture cost, or is it the intangible pride of owning a piece of your alma mater? As a former student, I completely understand the desire to represent your school, especially one as iconic as NYU. You want to feel connected, and NYU goods are a tangible way to do that. But there’s a fine line between school spirit and feeling exploited by prices that seem to ignore a student’s budget. I sometimes wonder if these prices are aimed more at proud parents and alumni rather than current students who are already managing tuition and living expenses in one of the most expensive cities in the world. What do you think – who are these exorbitant items really for?

This brand is just expensive in general, I have a hand towel by the same artists and it was like $70 the campus prices aren’t going up you just chose an expensive product to use as an example

how I lost 14 lbs by eating right, not less!
I eat more now than I did on the left — I had a bad relationship with food and I was lazy when it came to cooking. I used to be one of those girls that would count calories, eat “fat free”, wait until 4/5pm to have a bite of food… I would be so hungry I’d binge, understandably. I would feel so
