Is fashion design a worthwhile bachelor’s degree?

After 4 years in fashion design, I often question if my degree’s worth it. Unlike CS or finance peers with clear career paths, many art students hustle for unpaid roles, realizing success here demands wealth or genius. Fashion programs mimic academia but function as trade schools, offering unequal ROI compared to STEM. It’s a disservice to students assuming a bachelor’s guarantees mobility, only to find the industry’s prestige relies on privilege.

Prospective designers should intern before enrolling, don’t waste years and money on a gamble. Am I jaded, or do you see this divide too?

... Read moreIn the fashion industry, graduates often face challenges that distinguish their journeys from those in fields like computer science or finance. Many fashion design students find themselves in a competitive environment, grappling with unpaid internships and a lack of clear career paths. The importance of networking and connections cannot be overstated, as these often pave the way for opportunities in a field where privilege and personal connections appear to hold considerable weight. Internship experiences prior to pursuing a degree can provide valuable insights into the realities of the fashion sector. Prospective students are encouraged to seek internships during or even before applying for programs, as they can help clarify career aspirations and the feasibility of succeeding in this field. Additionally, exploring different educational institutions and their connections to industry leaders can influence post-graduation success. Ultimately, understanding the disparity in return on investment (ROI) between fashion and STEM disciplines is crucial. Students must weigh their passion for fashion against practical career considerations, especially in a discipline that frequently flaunts creativity and personal expression but can seem unpredictable and financially perilous. Engaging with discussion forums like #FashionDesignValue can also stimulate dialogue about the complexities of pursuing a career in fashion design.

No one is going to tell you the reality because that would require that they admit they madea wrong choice so dont bother speaking to someone in the industry you want to get into. Instead, understand that every industry is built on nepotism and contacts. Even law and medicine and accounting are like that. Sure you can be a lawyer, but if you want to come work for a super big firm, you beed to be in the top 0.1% of your class and always know junior who gradded in the bottom of that class is still better than you because of his daddy. Whatever you want to do, you have to play the game, you have to be 10x better than everyone around you. Or else, you are just like everyone else and they wont give you a real chance.

I see the divide but I feel like maybe talking to someone who has done it beforehand can give some transparency and clarity we all want to and are ready to jump on education to get degrees we think are necessary for success to find out we may or may not have needed it for whatever reason I hope u find a way through it a degree is just a piece of paper that doesn't define your passion...if fashion is your passion and you're struggling to find success in it... reroute and find a better more effective way to get ahead because degrees in art type of fields rely on passion results rather than degrees like those desk type of jobs rely on experience but more so degree's I haven't heard
