It’s tough being Ziggy😂
You might have seen Ziggy's latest adventure at the park, where our 'compromise' ended with me carrying him home because he declared himself 'too cold'! Honestly, that's a pretty typical day in the life of my sweet Ziggy Mann. Being a senior rescue dog isn't always easy, but it’s full of love, laughs, and sometimes, unexpected piggyback rides. When Mom mentioned I'd be 'too cold' for the park, she wasn't kidding. Senior dogs, especially those with thinner coats or a bit less energy, feel the chill much more intensely than younger pups. We always bundle him up in his favorite sweater, but sometimes, even with all the precautions, his internal thermostat just decides it's time for an early exit. That's why those moments of 'compromise' are so essential. We want him to enjoy the fresh air and smells, but his comfort and health always come first. So, if it's a bit chilly, we might opt for a shorter walk, or choose a sunnier spot in the park. The moment he gives me that 'I'm cold, Mom' look – usually a slight shiver, a slowing pace, or an attempt to snuggle into my legs – I know what's coming. And honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. Carrying him home isn't a chore; it's just part of our routine. It’s a small price to pay for the immense joy he brings into our lives. These little acts of service are what make caring for a senior rescue dog so special. Life with Ziggy is a constant reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple things. He might not be able to run for miles like a puppy, but his enthusiasm for a good sniff or a gentle stroll is just as infectious. We've learned to adapt our lives to his needs, whether it's ensuring soft bedding for his joints, a warm blanket on the couch, or making sure the park isn't too far from the car for those inevitable 'carry me' moments. For anyone considering bringing a senior rescue into their home, I can't recommend it enough. Yes, they come with their unique set of needs and sometimes require a bit more attention, but the love and companionship they offer are unparalleled. They settle in with such gratitude, and every day is a gift. Just be prepared for spontaneous snuggles, a slower pace, and possibly becoming your dog's personal chauffeur and carrier. And always remember to pay attention to their cues, especially when it comes to temperature. A little planning can make a world of difference in keeping them happy and healthy. It's truly tough being Ziggy sometimes, but it's even tougher to imagine life without him.
