How to Finally Speak Up (Even If You’re Scared)

Speaking up, especially when your voice shakes, your heart races, or you feel like you might cry the second you try. Yeah, that kind of speaking up. 💔 I know how scary it can feel when your body goes into panic mode just because you want to set a boundary, express how something made you feel, or just say the truth that’s been stuck in your throat for way too long. So if you’re reading this and thinking “YES, that’s me,” babe, this post is for you 💌

Let me start by saying that being scared to speak up doesn’t make you weak. It doesn’t make you dramatic. And it definitely doesn’t make your voice less worthy. Some of us grew up in environments where being “quiet” was safer. Or we were taught that being polite meant staying silent, even when something hurt. And now here we are..adults trying to unlearn that while managing friendships, relationships, jobs, and life in general 😮‍💨. But it’s never too late to give your voice the room it always deserved.

Here’s how I personally started learning to actually speak up, even when I felt like shutting down:

🌸 Start small. You don’t need to start with a full confrontation or deep heart-to-heart. Try speaking up in low-pressure situations: correcting your coffee order, telling a friend what movie you actually want to watch, or asking for clarification when someone confuses you. It trains your brain to realize that using your voice doesn’t end in disaster. Small wins matter.

🌸 Script it out in your head (or Notes app, let’s be honest 😅). Sometimes I write out exactly what I want to say yes, like a literal script. Especially if I know the conversation might get emotional. That way, I can stay grounded in what I need to communicate instead of spiraling or second-guessing myself mid-sentence.

🌸 Validate your fear but don’t let it lead. You’re not silly for being nervous. You’re not “overreacting” for needing to get something off your chest. Your fear is trying to protect you, but the best version of you? She’s got things to say. Try saying: “This is scary, but it’s scarier to keep holding this in.” That helped me so much. 🥺

🌸 Use your body to calm your mind. Deep breaths, grounding (touching something soft like a blanket or squeezing your fists), and posture help SO much. I literally had to train myself to unclench my jaw and breathe when I speak up. It’s wild how our bodies freeze when we feel unsafe, be gentle with yourself.

🌸 Let it be messy. You don’t need the perfect words. You’re allowed to cry. You can even take pauses. Being brave doesn’t mean being flawless it just means you chose truth over comfort. And that is so powerful.

NOW..Can I ask you something real quick? What’s one thing you’ve been wanting to say to someone? Maybe it’s “That hurt my feelings.” Maybe it’s “I need space.” Maybe it’s “I love you but I’m not okay.” Whatever it is your voice matters. Your emotions matter. Your needs absolutely matter. And you’re allowed to take up space. Always.

If you made it this far, thank you so much. Seriously. Every time someone reads my posts or supports my content, I feel SO grateful. The support means everything to me. It helps me keep creating from the heart and sharing what matters most to me. I post daily on every account because I really want to build a soft, kind, and close community with people like YOU 🫶🏻

... Read moreSpeaking up can be a daunting task, especially when anxiety and fear take over. Many people grapple with the internal pressure of voicing their opinions or feelings due to past experiences that have taught them to remain silent. This emotional burden can manifest physically, as the fear of confrontation often leads to body tension and mental blockages. However, it's important to understand that feeling afraid does not diminish the validity of your voice. Practicing assertiveness is a critical skill that can dramatically improve your mental health and personal relationships. Engaging in low-stakes conversations can help build your confidence. For example, practice speaking up about your preferences in casual scenarios, like choosing a restaurant or changing plans with friends. Over time, these small victories can empower you to tackle more significant conversations when they arise. Writing down your thoughts before speaking them out loud can also provide clarity and reduce anxiety. By preparing what you want to say, you can focus on delivering your message rather than becoming overwhelmed by your emotions. Remember, imperfect conversations are still valuable. Embrace vulnerability as part of the process. Everyone has the right to express their needs, and breaking this cycle of silence is the first step towards self-empowerment. Overall, it’s crucial to be gentle with yourself during this journey. Each time you choose to speak your truth, no matter how small the occasion, you’re taking a step toward becoming a more confident and authentic version of yourself. Change takes time, but with practice and patience, you will find your voice.
