【Molten Core Awakening】 MGSD Barbatos

Hey Gunpla builders and Gundam fans! I wanted to dive a bit deeper into my recent MGSD Barbatos project, which I teased earlier. This kit, the ASW-G-OB Barbatos, is actually the second release in the MGSD series, and let me tell you, it truly sets a high bar! For those unfamiliar, MGSD stands for Master Grade Super Deformed – imagine the intricate detail and articulation of a Master Grade kit, but scaled down to the adorable, chunky proportions of an SD Gundam. It’s the best of both worlds if you ask me! Building this MGSD Barbatos was such a fun experience. The parts fit together beautifully, and the internal frame is surprisingly detailed for its size. What really got me excited was taking it beyond a straight build and creating a dynamic diorama. The idea of a 'Molten Core Awakening' just clicked with me. I envisioned Barbatos bursting forth from a pool of lava, radiating raw power, much like its ferocity in Iron-Blooded Orphans. For the lava effect, I experimented with various techniques. I started with a base of uneven foam to create crevices and elevated areas, then sculpted liquid resin tinted with vibrant orange, red, and yellow pigments. Adding a clear top coat after drying gave it that glossy, molten look. Tiny LED lights hidden beneath the surface added a pulsating glow, really bringing the 'molten' aspect to life, especially in dim lighting. It was a learning curve, but seeing the final result was incredibly rewarding. One of the practical tips I picked up is to really think about the narrative you want to tell with your diorama. For my Barbatos, the lava wasn't just scenery; it was part of its awakening, emphasizing its strength. Don't be afraid to try new materials – clear acrylic sheets can make great water effects, and even everyday household items can be repurposed for terrain. The key is patience and layering. Comparing it to previous Barbatos kits I've built, the MGSD version offers a unique blend of displayability and desk-friendly size. You get all the iconic features – the mace, the katana, the unique armor pieces – but in a compact, highly poseable package. It's perfect for those who appreciate intricate engineering but have limited display space. If you're on the fence about picking up an MGSD kit, I highly recommend this Barbatos; it's a fantastic entry point into the series or a wonderful addition to any Gunpla collection. It’s truly an explosive display piece, and I'm already thinking about my next MGSD diorama project!
