After my mom spiraled into addiction following my dad's passing, I suddenly found myself homeless, having to rely on friends, couch surf, or even sleep in my car. What helped me cope was turning to filmmaking. Using a camera, I documented my journey and edited footage, which gave me a creative outlet and a sense of purpose amidst instability. Homelessness at a young age often brings complicated emotions, including grief, anger, and isolation. It’s important to remember that these feelings are natural, and seeking support—whether through friends, mentors, or mental health professionals—can make a huge difference. My experience taught me how trauma impacts not just me but also my siblings, who each processed our difficult family dynamic in their own way. Eventually, with time and outside help, my mom began recovery, but the scars remain. If you or someone you know is dealing with similar challenges, I encourage you to find an outlet, something creative or productive, to help channel those feelings. Also, keep the lines of communication open with siblings or trusted friends. Sharing your story can foster healing and connection. Remember, homelessness doesn’t define your worth or future; it’s a step in a journey toward rebuilding and reclaiming your life.
