Oh my goodness, if you're ever in Xiamen, China, you absolutely have to make the trip to Gulangyu Island! I recently experienced it firsthand, and let me tell you, it's every bit as magical as the photos suggest, especially when the weather is just right. My visit was truly unforgettable, and I can't recommend it enough as one of the top places to visit in Xiamen. Stepping onto Gulangyu is like entering another world. It's a completely car-free island, which means you get to wander through its charming, winding alleyways at your own pace, soaking in the unique blend of colonial and traditional Chinese architecture. I spent hours just getting lost, discovering hidden cafes and quaint shops. It's often called 'Piano Island' because of its rich musical history, and you can even visit the Organ Museum, which houses an incredible collection of antique organs – a truly unique experience! But for me, the real highlight was the natural beauty, especially the beaches. There's something incredibly soothing about the rhythm of the ocean. I found myself sitting by the shore, watching as the tide rises and the tide falls, feeling completely at peace. It's a fantastic spot for a leisurely stroll, barefoot in the sand, collecting seashells, or just enjoying the fresh sea air. The pristine waters and soft sands on the Xiamen beach side of the island are simply breathtaking. I even brought a piece of that tranquility home with me, a little shell from the shore, a perfect memento of an amazing day. Beyond the beaches, don't miss the chance to climb Sunlight Rock (Riguangyan). The panoramic views from the top are absolutely spectacular – you can see the entire island, the bustling Xiamen skyline across the water, and the endless expanse of the sea. It's quite a hike, but totally worth it for those photo opportunities! Another gem is Shuzhuang Garden, a beautifully landscaped classical Chinese garden built by the sea. It has cleverly integrated the ocean into its design, creating a harmonious blend of nature and art. For anyone planning a visit, definitely take the ferry from Xiamen – it's part of the adventure! Go on a weekday if you can, to avoid the biggest crowds, and make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes; you'll be doing a lot of exploring. And don't forget to try some of the local snacks while you're there – the seafood is incredibly fresh and delicious. Gulangyu Island truly is a beautiful escape and a must-see tourist attraction that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It’s an experience I’ll cherish forever!
