Warning that Vietnam's economy may overtake Thailand
"At present, Thailand's GDP is around $500 billion and Vietnam has more than 400 billion. But Vietnam has outperformed Thailand in terms of foreign investment (FDI) and export values, and in terms of population, it has not made an effective economic reform within Thailand."
Thailand's main problems are political instability, growing corruption in government departments and the decline in the standard of the education system
Politicians are focusing on popular policies rather than long-term structural reform, which includes technology and innovation. Moreover, they are also faced with the problem of decreasing the workforce as it reaches 13 million elderly people.
Vietnam, for its part, has enhanced the country's competitiveness, including the agricultural sector. As it has made significant progress in the sectors of anti-corruption and education, it has taken a much better position than Thailand in the ASEAN region.
In order to save Thailand's economy, long-term structural reforms need to go along with short-term economic stimulus.
Experts recommend that corruption be taken as soon as possible to restore confidence, especially foreign investors.

จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวในฐานะผู้ติดตามข่าวเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน ฉันเห็นว่าการเติบโตของเวียดนามเป็นเรื่องที่น่าจับตามองมาก โดยเฉพาะข้อมูลจาก OCR ที่แสดงให้เห็นว่า GDP ของเวียดนามกำลังขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็วและมีสัดส่วนการลงทุนจากต่างประเทศ (FDI) สูงกว่าประเทศไทย นอกจากนี้จำนวนประชากรที่มากถึง 100 ล้านคน ยังเป็นข้อได้เปรียบในการสร้างกำลังแรงงานและขยายตลาดภายในประเทศ ในขณะเดียวกัน ไทยกำลังประสบกับปัญหาที่รุนแรงในหลายด้าน เช่น ความไม่แน่นอนทางการเมืองที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อความเชื่อมั่นของนักลงทุน รวมถึงปัญหาการทุจริตในภาครัฐและระบบการศึกษาที่ยังคงมีช่องว่าง ทำให้การพัฒนาทางเศรษฐกิจมีข้อจำกัด สิ่งที่เวียดนามทำได้ดีคือการมีนโยบายต่อต้านการทุจริตอย่างจริงจัง รวมทั้งให้ความสำคัญกับการพัฒนาภาคการเกษตรควบคู่ไปกับเทคโนโลยีและอุตสาหกรรมการผลิต ส่งผลให้เวียดนามมีศักยภาพแข่งขันในตลาดโลกสูงขึ้น จากข้อมูลในภาพประกอบนี้ยังเผยให้เห็นว่าเวียดนามมีการเติบโตของการส่งออกและการลงทุนในอุตสาหกรรมไฮเทคอย่างชัดเจน ซึ่งหากไทยไม่เร่งปฏิรูปทางการเมืองและระบบการศึกษาพร้อมทั้งส่งเสริมการวิจัยและพัฒนา อาจเสี่ยงที่จะสูญเสียตำแหน่งผู้นำเศรษฐกิจในภูมิภาคนี้ ดังนั้น สำหรับคนทั่วไปรวมถึงนักลงทุน การทำความเข้าใจสถานการณ์เศรษฐกิจของสองประเทศนี้เป็นเรื่องสำคัญ เพราะจะส่งผลต่อโอกาสทางธุรกิจและการลงทุนในภูมิภาคอาเซียนในระยะยาว
