How to Have a Successful Photo Session W/ Toddlers
Family photos always feel so stressful, but with a few tips, they will always be WORTH IT!!
1. Make sure your toddlers know what they will be wearing. Talk up the “pretty dress” and “handsome button up shirt” and even consider a try-on session so there are no surprises or meltdowns when it comes time to get dressed the day of!
2. Get lots of candid poses! Let them play and take the lead. Do get a couple of everyone looking at the camera, but most of the time, the candids end up being my favorite and most shared.
3. Give them breaks! Let them have a (clean) snack that they don’t normally get like marshmallows or gummies or play with the flowers/grass/setting. The kids don’t have to be in all of the photos. Get some solo shots with your partner.
4. Make it a mini session. These are perfect for kids who have short attention spans (that’s all kids!) or partners who hate the photo session altogether. 20-30 minutes is plenty of time to get some great shots and is often so much more affordable!

Planning a successful photo session with toddlers requires a balance of preparation and flexibility. Start by discussing wardrobe options with your kids to ensure they feel comfortable on the day of the shoot. Highlighting the importance of a try-on session can prevent last-minute surprises. Encourage playful interaction during the shoot to capture authentic moments; these candid shots often turn out to be the favorites. It's essential to give toddlers breaks to recharge. Offer them special treats, like marshmallows or gummies, and encourage brief playtime with their surroundings to keep their spirits high. Remember, not every shot needs to include the kids—consider getting solo portraits with your partner to diversify your photo collection. Lastly, keep the session length in check. Toddlers typically have short attention spans, so aim for a quick 20-30 minute session. This approach not only captivates their interest but is often more economical, allowing you to focus on capturing those precious moments effectively.
