Extensions Reality

Why I finally tried extensions (and why I was scared)

I used to be that person who swore I’d “just grow it out” and be patient… until my hair went through a rough season. Between color decisions I made too fast and heat styling I didn’t respect enough, my hair started feeling uneven, dry, and honestly just not like “me.” I kept hearing extension horror stories, so I stayed scared for a long time.

But here’s the thing I learned the hard way: a lot of the horror stories aren’t because extensions automatically ruin hair—it’s usually because of the install, the upkeep, or the expectations. Extensions are not low effort. They’re not “set it and forget it.” They’re more like adopting a very cute, very high-maintenance pet that needs daily attention 😅

Once I accepted that, extensions became less scary and more like a lifestyle choice. And yes… they boosted my confidence in a way I didn’t expect.

The two methods I’ve lived with: I-Tips vs Wefts

I’ve tried more than one method, and I wish someone had explained the differences to me in plain English before I booked my first appointment. So here’s my real-life breakdown—pros, cons, and who I think each one fits best.

I-Tip extensions (individual beads everywhere)

I-Tips are made up of hundreds of tiny individual pieces attached around the head with small beads. The first time I saw them up close, I was like… wait, this is kind of genius? Because the pieces are small, they can blend really naturally when done right.

What I loved about I-Tips

1) The front fullness is unmatched. If you care a lot about the hair around your face looking thick and “done,” I-Tips can get closer to the hairline than some other methods. That made a huge difference for me in photos and when I wore my hair half-up.

2) The blend can look super seamless. Because the hair is distributed in small sections, it can move more like natural hair.

3) Wearing hair up felt easier. When I had I-Tips, I felt less paranoid about a track showing when I did a ponytail.

What I didn’t love about I-Tips

1) It can take a lot of hair packs. Because the pieces are individual, you often need multiple bundles to get the fullness you want. That adds up fast, and it’s not the method I’d pick if you’re trying to keep things simple.

2) Appointments can be long. Install can take hours, and move-ups aren’t always quick either. If you’re someone who gets restless in a chair, just mentally prepare.

3) Slipping happens. I had moments where a piece felt loose or slid more than I wanted. It’s not constant, but it’s annoying when it happens because you instantly feel like you’re “on watch.”

My honest vibe: I-Tips are pretty and flexible, but they require patience and consistency. If you want the most natural movement and you love wearing your hair up, they can be worth it.

Weft extensions (rows sewn in)

Wefts are basically rows of hair sewn onto braided sections (often multiple rows). This method felt like switching from “a million tiny tasks” to “a few big tasks.” The overall maintenance felt more straightforward for me.

What I loved about wefts

1) Easier washing + styling routine. Not effortless, but easier. Once I learned how to wash without tangling and how to dry properly, it became a repeatable routine.

2) Fullness lasts. Wefts can feel thicker overall, especially through the ends, which matters if you hate that stringy look after a few weeks.

3) Faster appointments. Installs and move-ups can be way quicker compared to methods with hundreds of individual pieces. That alone made me prefer wefts long-term.

4) Curls can hold forever. One of my favorite things: extension hair can hold a curl for days. Like… you do it once and it stays cute, which makes getting ready feel easier.

What I didn’t love about wefts

1) The “face frame” area can be tricky. Depending on your hair density and how the rows are placed, you might not get as much fullness right at the front compared to individual methods.

2) Baby hairs can make it itchy. If you have lots of short hairs or sensitive scalp moments, the grow-out can feel irritating sometimes.

3) Updos can be stressful. This is where I relate so hard to the “always paranoid about tracks showing” feeling. High ponytails, buns, and especially claw clips can pull on the wefts and cause discomfort. I had to relearn how I style my hair so I wasn’t constantly yanking on the rows.

The part nobody warns you enough about: maintenance is DAILY

If you’re considering extensions, I need you to hear this lovingly: extensions are a routine. Not just a “hair appointment.” A routine.

1) You cannot sleep on wet hair

This is non-negotiable. Sleeping with wet hair can increase the risk of matting, breakage, and even mold growth between rows if moisture stays trapped. That sounds dramatic until you realize how long hair can stay damp under a weft.

What helped me: I started treating wash day like a planned event. If I didn’t have time to fully dry, I didn’t wash. Simple.

2) Drying between the wefts takes time (yes, every time)

After washing, you have to make sure the hair is dry between each row. Not just the top layer. Not just “it feels mostly dry.” Actually dry. If you rush this step, you’re basically inviting tangles and discomfort.

I do it in sections: top row first, then underneath, then the mid lengths, then ends. It’s annoying, but it saves you later.

3) Brush smarter, not harder

One of the biggest mistakes I made early on was brushing too aggressively near the stitching area. If you brush over the sewing, you can snag thread or stress the attachment points.

My rule: hold the hair at the root with one hand, and brush from below the row down first. Then gradually work higher. It takes longer but prevents that “ripping” feeling.

4) Oil is your best friend (but placement matters)

Your scalp naturally produces oils that help your real hair. Extension hair doesn’t get that benefit. That’s why mid-lengths and ends can dry out fast.

I like using a small amount of oil daily on the mid-lengths to ends. Before bed, I’ll add a tiny bit, then braid my hair. It’s such an easy habit stack: oil → braid → sleep.

5) Move-ups are not optional

Skipping move-ups is how people end up with matting close to the root and damage that could’ve been avoided. Most people do move-ups around every 6–8 weeks, depending on hair growth and method. When I tried to “push it,” I regretted it. The grow-out gets harder to manage, and brushing becomes a battle.

Real talk: things that surprised me (good and bad)

Claw clips became my enemy

I used to live in claw clips. With wefts, a claw clip can grab a row, pull the hair, and instantly make your scalp feel sore. I had to switch to softer options and lower styles. If you’re a claw-clip person, just know you may need to adjust.

Swimming is complicated

I’m not saying you can never get them wet, but pool and ocean days made me anxious. Salt and chlorine can dry out hair fast, and wet hair + rows = extra tangling risk. If you’re someone who lives in the water all summer, extensions might feel like a constant project.

My natural hair felt thinner after removal

This is a big one. After taking extensions out, it’s common to feel like your hair is thinner. Sometimes it’s because you got used to having extra density. Sometimes it’s because you’re seeing shed hair that was trapped in the rows. And sometimes… it’s because your hair truly did experience stress from tension, brushing, or delayed move-ups.

For me, removal was a reset moment. I baby my hair after: gentle detangling, hydration, and I avoid heat for a while because my hair deserves a break.

If you’re set on getting extensions: my “do this first” checklist 🚨

1) Get a clean trim before install. Extensions won’t magically fix dead ends. If anything, dead ends tangle faster and make blending harder.

2) Commit to a simple, hydrating routine. Think: hydrating shampoo/conditioner, a hair mask, leave-in conditioner, oil, and heat protectant. Consistency matters more than having a million products.

3) Use heat protectant every time. Extension hair can get dry and brittle from heat. Heat protectant is one of the easiest ways to keep the hair looking nice longer.

4) Choose a skilled stylist. A good install changes everything. Placement, tension, blending, and guidance on home care—this is where extensions go from stressful to actually enjoyable.

5) Be honest about your lifestyle. If you hate long routines, if you swim constantly, if you never want to plan wash day… you might prefer temporary options instead of semi-permanent methods.

“Should I be afraid to get extensions?”

I don’t think fear helps, but I do think respect helps. Respect the maintenance, respect your scalp, respect move-ups, respect drying time. When I treated extensions like a serious commitment instead of a cute accessory, everything got better.

And confidence-wise? The before-and-after difference can feel unreal. Having length and fullness instantly can make you feel like yourself again—especially if your natural hair is in a healing phase.

My current go-to routine (the realistic version)

Wash day: I wash when I have time to fully dry. I focus shampoo on the scalp, conditioner on mid-lengths to ends, and I’m gentle around attachment points.

Drying: I dry the roots and the spaces between rows first, then the rest. I don’t go to bed until it’s fully dry.

Daily: Brush gently (especially near rows), add a tiny bit of oil to the ends, and keep styles low-tension.

Night: Loose braid or loose pony, and if you’re prone to tangles, a bonnet or silk pillowcase helps a lot.

If you’re debating it, here’s the mindset that helped me

Extensions aren’t “good” or “bad.” They’re a tool. If you’re in a season where you want a confidence boost, you want fullness, you want length, or you’re growing out damage—extensions can be amazing. But if you want something you never have to think about, they can feel like too much.

I still love the way extensions make me feel, but I don’t romanticize the upkeep anymore. I plan for it, I budget time for it, and I keep my routines simple so I can actually stick to them.

If you want, tell me your hair type (fine/thick, straight/wavy/curly) and your lifestyle (gym, swimming, how often you style), and I can help you think through which method would fit you best 💛
