Underlash Glow-Up

Why I switched to underlash clusters (and didn’t look back)

I used to be obsessed with salon lash extensions. Like… the kind of obsessed where you love the “wake up and go” look so much that you ignore all the little downsides until they’re not little anymore.

For me, the biggest issue wasn’t even the time. It was how the look could start to change fast once a few pieces shed. One day the lashes looked perfect, the next day one side looked lighter, then suddenly the whole vibe felt “off.” And if I couldn’t get in for a refill right away, I’d be stuck trying to make uneven lashes look intentional. 😭

Also, I noticed something I didn’t expect: sometimes heavy lash looks can make the eye area feel darker or more closed off. I love drama lashes for certain moments, but day-to-day I wanted my eyes to look brighter and more “open,” not weighed down.

That’s when I started getting into underlash clusters (also called underlash extensions, DIY underlash, or lash clusters applied under the lash line). And honestly… it gave me the same confidence boost with way more flexibility.

What “underlash” actually means (and why it looks so natural)

Underlash application is exactly what it sounds like: instead of placing lash clusters on top of the natural lashes, the clusters are placed under the lash line (still on the lashes, not on the skin/waterline). This placement is the secret sauce for that seamless look—because the band is tucked underneath, it’s harder to spot from the front.

When it’s done right, it gives that “are those your real lashes?” energy. The clusters blend into the base of the lashes, and the lash line looks soft instead of obviously strip-lash bold.

I also love that underlash styles can be super customizable. Some days I want a clean, everyday set. Other days I want a lifted cat-eye shape. With clusters, I can change the map whenever I feel like it, instead of being locked into one look until my next appointment.

My realistic take: cute… but not always effortless

I’m not going to pretend underlash clusters are magic with zero maintenance. They can be beginner-friendly, but they’re also a little “high-maintenance in disguise.” The reason is simple: they sit closer to the inner eye environment (humidity, tears, skincare, rubbing), so they can twist easier and shed faster if the bond breaks down.

By day three, if I’ve been careless—using oily cleanser, rubbing my eyes, brushing downward—yeah, I’ll feel it. Not pain, but that slight “something is there” awareness. When I’m gentle and consistent, they stay comfortable and pretty for much longer.

So I treat underlash sets like hair extensions: they’re not hard, but they do require respect. 😌

What I use (no brand names, just the categories)

To do an underlash cluster set at home, I keep it simple:

1) Lash clusters (different lengths help create a map)

2) A bond (a lash adhesive made for cluster wear)

3) A seal (helps remove tackiness and lock things in)

4) Tweezers (regular or lash tweezers—precision matters)

Some sets come with pre-glued clusters, which can feel easier at first. I’ve tried both styles, and I’ll say this: pre-glued can be quick for a one-day look, but if I want better control and a cleaner blend, bond + seal gives me more consistency.

My step-by-step underlash routine (the way that finally worked)

I learned the hard way that underlash success is mostly about prep and placement. Here’s the routine that gives me the most natural finish:

Step 1: Start with truly clean lashes

No lotion, no face oil residue, no creamy cleanser film. If there’s leftover slip on the lashes, the bond won’t grip well, and the clusters will start sliding or twisting early.

If I did skincare right before, I wait a bit and make sure the lash line is dry. This one habit alone made my sets last noticeably longer.

Step 2: Apply a thin layer of bond (like mascara, but lighter)

I apply bond to my natural lashes the same way I’d apply mascara—but way less. I’m not trying to coat every lash heavily. I just want a light, even layer focused near the base.

If I use too much bond, the clusters can clump, stick to the wrong lashes, or feel thick. Thin layers keep everything soft and flexible.

Step 3: Place clusters from outer corner to inner corner

This is my favorite order because it helps me build the shape first. I pick up a cluster with tweezers, then place it under my natural lashes, close to the root—without touching the waterline.

I press it in gently and hold for a second so it grabs. Then I move inward.

The inner corner is where I slow down. If the inner cluster is too long or too dense, it can poke, twist, or just look heavy. I usually go shorter and lighter there for comfort and realism.

Step 4: Seal the base

Once the clusters are on, I apply seal at the roots. This helps remove sticky residue and makes the set feel more “finished.” It also helps reduce that tacky feeling that can make lashes catch lint or stick to each other.

Step 5: Pinch the clusters into the natural lashes

This step is underrated. I use tweezers to gently pinch the clusters together with my natural lashes at the base. It helps everything fuse into one line so the lashes don’t look like separate pieces sitting underneath.

When I skip this step, the set can look good from far away but less seamless up close. When I do it, the blend is chef’s kiss. ✨

Lash mapping that looks lifted (my go-to maps)

Mapping is basically choosing different cluster lengths across the lash line to create a shape. I like having a few lengths on hand (for example, something like 10–16 mm range) so I can customize.

Map A: Soft everyday (bright eyes)

I keep the inner corner short, build slightly in the middle, then taper at the outer corner. This gives a clean, wide-awake look that doesn’t feel heavy.

This is my “I want to look pretty but not obviously done” map.

Map B: Cat-eye lift (more snatched)

I go shorter inside and gradually longer toward the outer corner. This gives that lifted, elongated vibe. If I’m doing a sharper makeup look, this map always matches.

One thing I learned: if the outer corner is too long for my eye shape, it can droop instead of lift. So I keep the longest clusters controlled, not extreme.

Map C: Wispy glam (photos/events)

I mix lengths to create texture—like alternating slightly longer and slightly shorter clusters so it looks fluttery. This is the one that gets compliments because it looks airy, not blocky.

How I keep underlash clusters looking good for days

This is where the “gorgeous but not effortless” part comes in. The good news is: the rules are simple.

1) I avoid oily products near the lash line

Oil breaks down bond fast. If I’m doing a cleansing balm or heavy face oil, I keep it away from the lashes and use a different method around the eyes.

2) I brush gently upward (never downward)

Downward brushing can pull at the clusters and loosen them. If I need to tidy them, I use a light hand and brush upward, focusing on shape rather than force.

3) I don’t rub my eyes

If my eyes feel itchy, I tap around the area instead of rubbing. Rubbing is basically asking the clusters to twist.

4) I accept that fills happen sooner than people expect

Underlash sets can look dreamy, but they’re closer to the action—humidity, tears, skincare—so shedding can show sooner. If I want them to look perfect all the time, I plan for touch-ups more frequently than a traditional “monthly” lash mindset.

Bottom lashes: the tiny detail that makes everything look pro

Once I started doing underlash clusters, I realized something: if the top lashes look amazing but the lower lash line is ignored, the face can still look unfinished.

I’m not saying I do heavy bottom lashes daily, but I do love a soft definition under the eye when I want that “basic to pro” jump.

My trick is to keep it subtle and clean—because under the eye can go messy fast. A little effort there makes the whole look feel intentional.

The eyeliner trick I pair with underlash for lifted eyes

If eyeliner sometimes makes the eyes look heavier, I do this instead:

• Thin liner at the inner corner

• Slightly thicker toward the outer corner

• A soft mauve/purple shadow under the lower lash line

Mauve tones add depth without looking harsh, and that outer emphasis lifts the eye shape. When I pair this with underlash clusters, my eyes look more almond-shaped and awake—like I actually slept. 😅

Comfort notes (because nobody talks about this enough)

Comfort is the whole reason I prefer underlash clusters over heavier long-term extension looks. When clusters are placed correctly, they shouldn’t poke or scratch. If they do, it usually means one of these happened:

• The cluster is too close to the waterline (it should sit on the lashes, not the wet area)

• The inner corner piece is too long (inner corner needs softness)

• Too much bond was used (creates stiffness and weird pulling)

When I adjust those, the set feels lightweight and “barely there,” which is exactly what I want for everyday.

Who underlash clusters are perfect for (in my experience)

I reach for underlash clusters when I want:

• A natural lash extension look at home

• A quick routine (once I’m practiced)

• Flexible lash mapping depending on my mood

• A brighter, more open eye look instead of heavy lash drama

They’re also amazing when life is busy and I still want that “I woke up pretty” vibe without committing to a long appointment schedule.

Little reminders that make the biggest difference

• Less glue is more. Thin bond layers look cleaner and feel lighter.

• Outer-to-inner placement keeps the shape controlled.

• Pinching at the base is what makes it seamless.

• If you want long wear, keep oils away.

• If you want comfort, keep inner corner short and soft.

Underlash clusters gave me my favorite version of lashes: soft, customizable, and confidence-boosting without feeling like my whole schedule has to revolve around maintenance. And the best part is I can go subtle, wispy, or lifted depending on the day—same technique, different map. 💅🏾✨
