4 things to know before visiting Edinburgh, Scotland part 1🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

👟Go on a free walking tour

A free walking tour is a great way to learn about interesting stories about the history of the city.

🏙️Get out of the city

You should go on a day trip to a smaller town or nature-focused destination in Scotland. A popular day trip to do is to the Highlands and Loch Ness but you can also go to some of the smaller fishing towns within 1-2 hours of Edinburgh.

🥾Arthur’s Seat is a pretty easy hike

If you are a young and somewhat fit and healthy person, hiking up Arthur’s Seat isn’t too difficult and it’s a very popular activity to do. I personally made it up to the peak in just over 30 minutes even when stopping to take photos. Coming down is even faster.

🏡Stay in a guesthouse instead of a hotel

Guesthouses are often cheaper and more charming!

First, a free walking tour is highly recommended—it offers an engaging way to dive into the city's rich history while exploring its landmarks. Many tours offer local insights that are not found in guidebooks. Moreover, for a broader experience of Scotland, consider venturing outside the city. The Scottish Highlands, renowned for their breathtaking scenery, are just a day trip away. Alternatively, you may explore smaller fishing towns that boast unique charm and attractions. Hiking is another popular activity—head to Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano and the highest point in Edinburgh, where you'll enjoy stunning panoramic views after a relatively easy hike. The ascent can be done in about 30 minutes and is accessible for those who have some fitness level. Finally, opting for a guesthouse over a hotel can provide a more personalized and budget-friendly accommodation experience. Guesthouses often reflect local character and hospitality, making your stay even more memorable. Each of these tips aims to enrich your visit, ensuring you make the most out of your time in this historic city.
