What They don’t tell you about
Are you thinking about getting a septum?
Here is what you should know before you do!
I know there are many people who share their list of common septum experiences, but I’d like to share mine!
First for some questions???
•Does it hurt?
- Everyone has a different pain tolerance but over all the septum piercing is known to be the least painful. I would personally rate it a 1/10 as it’s a little uncomfortable and feels like a quick pinch.
•What should I do after I get pierced?
- FIRST! DO NOT PLAY WITH IT!! Yes you will do it even if you aren’t noticing but as long as you try not to the better it will heal!
-Second your piercer should explain how to clean your piercing properly and how often you should do it…(EVERYDAY) they can also recommend a saline solution for you (any should be fine)
What They Don’t Tell You
So this is going to be a small list about stuff I have experience from having a septum.
1. It STINKS LIKE NASTY! Since the piercing is right in between your nostrils you can smell the healing process. The best way I can describe the scent is mmm musty? But a little worse, but no worries the smell does go away after it has healed 👍🏼
2. This one may be even more gross than the first one. Everyone has boogers and they tend to stick to our skin and nose hairs. Due to the lack of skin and hair on your septum, if a booger hardens and it’s near the septum.. if you exhale that little booger will absolutely shoot out with out warning 😭
3. You will (out of habit) make the silliest of faces and will most definitely play with your septum with your lips!
4. I found that it caused pain on my teeth! It would either hurt a little throughout the day or for a few minutes.

Thinking about getting a septum piercing? It's an exciting decision, and while many focus on the aesthetic, there's a whole world of practicalities and personal experiences that can truly make or break your journey. Beyond the initial 'does it hurt?' there's so much to prepare for and understand, especially when considering how to prepare for a septum piercing and all the little things to know before getting a septum piercing. First off, let's talk preparation. Before you even step into a piercing studio, doing your homework is crucial. I spent weeks researching local piercers, looking at their portfolios, reading reviews, and ensuring their hygiene standards were top-notch. Don't be afraid to ask about their sterilization processes and what kind of jewelry they use. On the day of your appointment, make sure you've eaten a good meal, are well-hydrated, and have had enough sleep. This helps your body handle the slight stress of the piercing. Avoid caffeine or alcohol beforehand, as they can thin your blood and increase sensitivity. Mentally preparing yourself, perhaps with some deep breathing exercises, can also help calm any pre-piercing jitters. Now, for the actual piercing process. While my original article touched on pain, it's worth elaborating on the experience itself. Once you're in the chair, your piercer will mark the sweet spot (that thin bit of skin just behind the cartilage, before it thickens). They'll clamp it, which is usually more uncomfortable than painful – a dull pressure, really. The needle goes through quickly, and while it might make your eyes water (it is your nose, after all!), it's generally a swift, sharp pinch rather than a prolonged ache. Personally, I found the anticipation worse than the actual piercing! Afterward, you might feel a bit of pressure or a slight throbbing, but nothing unbearable. Aftercare is where the real commitment begins, and it's one of the most important things to know before getting a septum piercing. Your piercer will give you specific instructions, but generally, it involves cleaning with a sterile saline solution twice a day. You can buy pre-made saline sprays, which are super convenient, or make your own with non-iodized salt and distilled water (though store-bought is often safer). Gently spray or soak the piercing, then gently wipe away any 'crusties' with a clean, non-woven gauze. The key is to be gentle – no twisting, turning, or playing with your jewelry! Avoiding touching it with unwashed hands is paramount to preventing infection. Also, try to keep makeup, lotions, and harsh soaps away from the area. The initial healing phase usually lasts 6-8 weeks, but full healing can take several months. Be patient! Finally, let's address the elephant in the room that some of you might be wondering about from search queries: 'septum piercings are ugly.' This is such a subjective thing, and what one person finds appealing, another might not. But that's the beauty of personal style, right? Septum piercings are incredibly versatile. You can choose from tiny, subtle rings to bold, ornate designs. You can even opt for a retainer that allows you to flip the jewelry up into your nose, completely hiding it for work or other situations. The variety of jewelry materials and styles means you can truly customize the look to suit your face and aesthetic. Don't let someone else's opinion deter you if it's something you genuinely want. It's your body, your choice, and ultimately, a fantastic way to express yourself!
