Planting cherry tomatoes in a laundry basket
I have successfully done this last year.
You don’t need fancy stuff to grow food.

After my successful cherry tomato harvest last year, I'm so excited to share how incredibly easy it is to grow your own food, even with something as unconventional as a laundry basket! Seriously, you don't need a sprawling backyard or expensive raised beds. My tiny urban space transformed into a productive garden, yielding sweet, juicy cherry tomatoes all season long. It truly proved that innovative solutions can lead to amazing results. So, why a laundry basket? Well, for starters, they're incredibly accessible and affordable. Most have built-in drainage holes, which is crucial for preventing root rot – a common issue in container gardening. The open weave also provides excellent aeration for the roots, helping your plants breathe and thrive. Plus, they're surprisingly portable, allowing you to chase the sun or move plants indoors if unexpected frost threatens. It's truly a game-changer for anyone looking to embrace gardening without a big investment. When I picked out my laundry basket, I looked for something sturdy, preferably plastic (as metal can rust), with plenty of drainage. Make sure it's big enough to accommodate the root ball of a cherry tomato plant – I usually go for at least a 15-gallon equivalent for a good harvest. Before adding soil, I sometimes line the bottom with a bit of landscaping fabric or even an old kitchen drawstring bag (cut open) to prevent soil from washing out too quickly while still allowing water to drain. This little trick keeps things tidy! Then, fill your basket with a high-quality potting mix, not garden soil, as potting mix offers better drainage and nutrients for containers. Once your basket is ready, plant your cherry tomato seedling (or a few seeds, though seedlings give you a head start) right in the center. Give it a good watering immediately. Cherry tomatoes are sun-lovers, so find a spot where your basket gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Watering is key – since laundry baskets drain so well, you'll likely need to water daily, especially during hot spells. Stick your finger an inch or two into the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water. As your plant grows, it will need support. I found that a simple tomato cage or even just a sturdy stake works wonders to prevent the branches from breaking under the weight of the fruit. I also give my plants a diluted liquid feed every couple of weeks, which really boosts their production. And it's not just cherry tomatoes! I've seen friends successfully grow potatoes in laundry baskets – the harvest is really fun, just tipping the basket over. Many herbs, peppers, and even some leafy greens can also thrive in this setup. It's all about choosing varieties suited for containers and providing them with adequate space and care. This 'laundry basket garden' concept truly opens up a world of possibilities for urban gardeners or anyone with limited space. It's a testament to the fact that resourcefulness can lead to a bountiful harvest, making fresh, homegrown produce a reality for everyone.
