Where to start in the Bible!
Hey everyone! If you're like me, when you first decided to dive into the Bible, you probably stared at its many pages and thought, 'Okay, but where do I even begin?!' It can feel super overwhelming, especially with all those different books, chapters, and verses. But trust me, it's a journey worth taking, and it doesn't have to be intimidating. My Personal Tip for Starting Out: Many people, including myself, find it most helpful to start with the New Testament, specifically the Gospels. Why? Because they tell the incredible story of Jesus' life – His teachings, miracles, and ultimate sacrifice. It's the heart of our faith! I remember starting with the Gospel of John; it felt so personal and immediate. It really helped me understand who Jesus is and what He means for us. Matthew, Mark, and Luke also offer fantastic perspectives, and collectively, they are a great foundation. Beyond the Gospels: Books for Everyday Life & Deeper Understanding Once you've spent some time in the Gospels, you might be wondering what's next. Based on my own experience and what I've learned, here are a few books that offer incredible guidance for different aspects of life, echoing some of the amazing insights I've found: Psalms: When I'm feeling all sorts of emotions – joy, sorrow, confusion, gratitude – I turn to the Psalms. They are raw, honest prayers and songs that help you 'feel your emotions with God.' It’s comforting to know that people thousands of years ago felt the same way I do, and that God hears it all. Proverbs: If you're looking for practical wisdom on 'how to live well' in daily life, Proverbs is your go-to. It's packed with short, punchy sayings about everything from managing money to choosing friends wisely. I often read a chapter a day for a quick dose of wisdom. James: This book is all about putting your faith into action. It challenges you on 'how to live out your faith' – not just hearing the Word, but doing it. It’s a powerful read for anyone wanting to make their beliefs tangible. Ephesians: For understanding Christian doctrine, unity, and 'how to live a holy life,' Ephesians is profound. It reminds us of our identity in Christ and how we should walk worthy of our calling. How to Make Bible Reading a Habit (and Not Just a Chore!) Don't try to read it all at once! Seriously, a little bit every day is far more impactful than trying to cram. Find a good study Bible or app. Many offer notes and explanations that clarify complex passages, which is a lifesaver for beginners. Pray before you read. Ask God to open your heart and mind to understand His Word. Journal your thoughts. This is where #biblejournaling comes in! Write down what stands out, questions you have, or how a verse applies to your life. It makes it so personal. Don't get bogged down in the Old Testament too early. While crucial, the Old Testament often focuses on God's covenant with Israel, the law, prophecies, and historical narratives leading up to Jesus. It can be a lot for a beginner. You can always come back to it with a stronger foundation. Remember, your Bible journey is personal. There's no single 'best order' that works for everyone, but these starting points and tips have helped me immensely. Just start somewhere, and let God guide you!
