🚗 Get Your International Drivers Permit
.:For US Citizens:.
This was one of the easiest things to do in getting ready for our trip to Japan 🇯🇵.
If you’re a member at AAA, it will be easy for you too!
.::. EDIT- you DO NOT have to have a AAA MEMBERSHIP to get an International Drivers Permit.::.
**PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EARLIEST YOU CAN HAVE YOUR PERMIT IS WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF YOUR INTENDED TRIP.**
Step 1: Google “AAA International Drivers Permit” and select the link that is titled AAA IDP International Drivers Permit. This should take you to the AAA page where you will scroll down the page until you see HOW TO APPLY?
Download the application and fill it out (either using Adobe or by hand printing).
**PLEASE NOTE THE INFORMATION ON THE APPLICATION MUST MATCH YOUR ID**
Application does ask when you are leaving the country.
Step 2: Head on down to your local AAA office with AAA membership card, application and drivers license in tow. Check in for International Drivers Permit.
They will ask if you need a passport picture taken as well. We got ours done there as it was $7 cheaper for each persons photo than it was when I went to the UPS store ($15 each). The photo through AAA for us were $8 each.
Step 3: Review the information written on the International Drivers Permit is accurate before signing the permit. This is when they will also ask WHEN you want your permit to be go into effect.
Step 4: Pay your fees. $20 for the application + $8 for the photo = $28
Step 5: Secure your drivers permit until you take off.
You MUST have BOTH your US Drivers License AND the International Drivers Permit with you while driving in another country in order for the permit to allow driving privileges. If you do NOT have your US License on you, the permit DOES NOT GRANT driving privileges so legal fees and fines will be applicable.

When planning to drive abroad, obtaining an International Driver's Permit (IDP) is crucial. This document is recognized globally and translates your U.S. driver's license, facilitating legal driving in many countries. Start by confirming your eligibility; in most cases, you can apply within six months of your trip. You can obtain an IDP through organizations like AAA, which streamline the application process. While AAA membership can ease the process, it is not mandatory. Gather your U.S. driver's license, a passport photo (often available at the issuing office for a fee), and the completed application form. It's essential to ensure that the details on your application match those on your ID. Once you submit your application, the processing fee is typically around $20. It's wise to review the IDP for accuracy upon receipt. Note that an IDP does not replace your original driver's license; you must carry both while driving abroad, as driving without your U.S. license can result in fines and legal issues. Some countries require you to be at least 18 years old to drive, while others may have different regulations. Before you travel, check the specific driving requirements for your destination country to ensure compliance with local laws. Having this permit not only provides peace of mind but also enhances your travel experience, enabling exploration at your own pace. Happy travels!
