Come To Work w/ Me @ B&N 📚🛍️💕✨

I have been a full time bookseller for over a year and was cross trained to be a barista @ Barnes & Noble. I LOVE IT. SAVE this for inspo to apply before the summer.

FAQs

౨ৎ “How do you get hired? I’ve applied so many times”

COVER LETTER! We get so many applications and people calling in wanting to work here. Stick out by making a cover letter that explains WHY you want to work here, why you love reading etc etc… What makes you passionate about books or wanting to be a barista STICK OUT. Be yourself.

౨ৎ ”What’s the employee discount like?”

So yes, it’s true. We get 50% off of ALL books in store and most online. We also get 50% off of B&N drinks(the Starbucks in store) and food. I think we get 20% off of music/vinyls and 30% off of DVDS. Journals are 40% off and anything else like stationary or gift items are 30% off.

౨ৎ ”Do you actually like your job?”

I adore my job and love it with all my heart. It’s honestly the first job I’ve ever worked at where I feel respected and appreciated. It’s like a second family. They’re truly accepting and supportive. Being neurodivergent & on the spectrum, it’s scary working somewhere new because of anxiety, stress or thinking there are “mean coworkers”, but not here. It’s such a healthy environment and the training process was amazing. I love it here. It does get busy during the holidays and may seem stressful but that’s anywhere you know? We all look out for each other and have each other backs. It’s never a completion.

౨ৎ Cons ౨ৎ

The only con to working here (if you really want to call it that) would be not having self control 🫠 I have worked here for over a year and still feel like I need to buy a book or five… every shift, simply because they’re half off. DO NOT FALL INTO THIS VICIOUS CYCLE. The books will always be here and you will always have a chance to purchase them. Me myself, I’m on a book ban right now 🙃 But that’s honestly all.

... Read moreWorking at Barnes & Noble offers a unique opportunity for book enthusiasts to immerse themselves in a literary environment. Prospective employees often ask how to stand out in their applications. A well-crafted cover letter that highlights your passion for reading can significantly improve your chances. Consider sharing personal anecdotes about how books have influenced your life or why being a barista excites you. The generous employee discounts are another significant perk—enjoy 50% off books and select café items, which can lead to a tempting library haul every paycheck. Many employees appreciate the supportive community at their workplace, which fosters a sense of belonging and enhances job satisfaction. This emotionally nurturing environment is particularly beneficial for those navigating neurodiversity, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere. However, it's essential to manage your book-buying impulse since the discounts can be enticing. To maintain self-control, you might consider budgeting or establishing a reading list to prevent overspending. Finally, remember that every job has its stresses—especially during peak seasons—yet teamwork plays a crucial role in promoting harmony and support among colleagues, making it a fulfilling experience overall.

Literally me, I worked for exactly a year before being let go because of coworker issues when I transferred. I was cross trained senior bookseller, and oversaw the manga room and collectibles as well as the book pillar we had in the cafe. I adored my job as well and I miss it so much. HEAVY on the No self control part!
