Career Tips: How to Be a Better Public Speaker
Public speaking is a crucial skill in almost any career, but it can be hard! Here are some tips to help you improve communication, be a stronger plus confident speaker at work, helping you grow into your career as a leader.
1️⃣ Speaking clearly during public speaking is crucial for effective communication. Articulate your words by practicing enunciating words slowly and deliberately. Use tongue twisters or diction exercises to improve articulation! Remember not to speak too quickly, either. This can lead to mumbled or rushed speech. Practice pacing by reading aloud and using pauses to emphasize key points.
2️⃣ Calming your nervous system before and during public speaking can help you present more confidently and effectively. Breathe in deeply through your nose for a count of four, hold for four, then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of four. Repeat this technique several times. Once you've relaxed physically, focus on your mindset. Remind yourself of your strengths and past successes, using phrases like "I am prepared," "I can do this," and "I am capable."
3️⃣ Using body language can significantly enhance your communication and connect with your audience if used in the right way! Stand with your shoulders back and arms open rather than crossed, and engage with different members of the audience to create a connection. Remember to avoid overly dramatic gestures that can distract from your message.
