Haunted Places to Visit in Michigan!

Michigan, while a less popular state (in my opinion), has a large amount of spooky history! Here are some of my favorites that I’ve personally visited! All three locations are open to the public, and the Felt Mansion is now an event hall, for things like weddings!

1. Felt Mansion

The Felt mansion was a huge pride for my hometown, being the location for many creepy stories. With building completed in 1928, Agnes and Dorr Felt lived here for, unfortunately not very long, as Agnes died 6 weeks later in the master bedroom, and Dorr passed away in 1930. It’s said to be haunted by Agnes and a variety of other ghosts. Furthermore, the nearby woods are said to be home to “melon heads”, hybrid people that escaped from an old local asylum.

2. Allegan Old Jail Museum

In the local lake in Allegan, a girl is said to have drowned in 1892, being buried in a nearby cemetery. A vintage bible was donated to the museum, containing an envelope that had a lock of hair from the girl, and a dried flower from her grave. It’s said that she now haunts the halls of the museum, speaking to guests and being spotted by many.

3. Ada Cemetery

Also called the Ada Witch Cemetery, or its official name of Findlay Cemetery, has a dark history. In the 1800s, in the close woods an unfaithful woman was murdered by her husband, who ended up also dying from injuries inflicted while trying to murder her lover (who also succumbed to his injuries). She is said to haunt the woods and the cemetery, being seen as a “lady in white”, weeping, screaming, walking, touching visitors, and more. Furthermore, there’s a local grave dated to 1870 that is believed to be her grave, that visitors leave gifts at (not the grave in the picture).

(I took the picture of the grave at Ada Cemetery, all other photos are from Google)

... Read moreMichigan might sometimes be overlooked, but trust me, its hidden corners are brimming with spine-tingling history and local legends waiting to be uncovered! Beyond the well-known stories, there’s a unique charm to exploring places where the past feels incredibly close, and the air itself seems to whisper tales of old. When I ventured to the historic Felt Mansion, I wasn't just walking through an old building; I was stepping into a nearly century-old tragedy. Imagine the life Agnes and Dorr Felt envisioned, only for it to be cut short so dramatically. As you wander through its grand halls, especially if you're there for an event, you can't help but wonder if Agnes is still overseeing her beloved home. And the talk of "melon heads" in the nearby woods? It adds another layer of local folklore that makes the entire experience even more unsettling and uniquely Michigan. The Allegan Old Jail Museum offers a different kind of chill. It’s not just about the spectral girl from the lake; it's about the tangible history preserved within those brick walls. Museums like this aren't just collections of artifacts; they’re keepers of local memory, often with stories so vivid they feel like a "museum of campfire stories" come to life. As I walked the corridors, seeing the vintage bible and the lock of hair, I felt a deep connection to the past, almost as if the very air was imbued with the spirits of those who once resided there. It’s a powerful reminder of how historical sites can become focal points for enduring legends. And then there’s Ada Cemetery, or Findlay Cemetery, with its solemn Ada Cemetery tombstone and the haunting legend of the Lady in White. Visiting a place steeped in such a dramatic, tragic story makes you feel like you're intruding on a centuries-old drama. The atmosphere itself is palpable – the rustling leaves, the ancient trees, the quiet reverence of the graves – it all sets the stage for encounters with the unknown. I always feel a profound sense of history and mystery when I'm in places like this, pondering the true events that birthed such enduring legends. If these stories pique your interest and you're looking for more haunted sites in Michigan, my advice is to dig a little deeper. While there isn't a single "haunted places near me app" that covers everything, local historical societies (like the Allegan County Historical Society!), public libraries, and even community forums are treasure troves of spooky local lore. Many small towns in Michigan have their own unique ghostly tales, often shared through generations. Always go with an open mind, be respectful of the locations, and maybe bring a friend – you never know what you might encounter! Exploring these places is not just about the scares; it's about connecting with Michigan's rich, often darker, history in a truly unforgettable way.

Greenfield Village!!! In Dearborn MI! The Webster house has the most activity! Remember these are the actual original homes that were moved into the museum’s village ❤️ my grandmother used to work there, and she would tell me so many stories! Super cool ! Look it up if you haven’t ❤️

I’ve lived in Michigan since I was a child (I’m 65) and love most everything about it! 43 of those years were spent in Saugatuck or close by. As a child my brothers frequently threatened dropping me off in the woods where the “Melonheads” lived! I’ve been through Felt Mansion so many times, and long before they made it beautiful again. The ghosts are REAL! Not harmful, but not happy with being invaded by the public either. Melancholy I suppose, as a ghost should be? I work for a hospitality temp service, and have been blessed to work a few events at Felt. Try feeling someone put their hand on your arm and looking down at…nothing. Happened twice in one evening! I’m very inclined to believe anyway, and I kept it to myself later sharing with those who wouldn’t scoff at me. Michigan is RICH in historical mystery! Haunted barns, lighthouses, Victorian homes…I regret that my recently purchased 1945 home isn’t older, as many of the houses in my now hometown of Dowagiac are 1850’s and up. We did find a wooden box of old photos, some tintypes! Some dated 1902 and later. Figure my cats are portals to the spirit world, and I’ve seen it happen in my younger days, when 3 heads turn listening intently (at nothing) and watching nothing move through the room! That house was in Holland and built in 1890. Meanwhile my cats and I will still be waiting for those spirits!!
