Let’s review Katabasis…or dnf it.

Sadly… this book was a no for me.

A journey into Hell? Magick? Dark academia? Hell yes. I was so stinkin excited to get into this book, because it was my first REAL experience of the “academia” genre. I had high expectations since Kuang’s “Poppy War” has such raging reviews!

What the actual FUCK did I read?!?!

First off, lets start with the few GOOD things! I absolutely love the way Kuang is able to delve so deeply into descriptive writing! It is very inspiring to me personally, as I struggle to make the most boring sentences into something beautiful. She can do this!

Second, she knows her shit. Believe me, when I first started reading the “unending” descriptions of Hell and philosophy, along with all the different kinds of theories into what Hell is actually like, I was blown away! I was so excited to see where it all peaked.

Until it didnt. A “trip to hell” can’t just be so… unimportant. So…boring, if Im being honest… and now heres where I got up and left the classroom…

Do you know how many PARAGRAPHS of philosophical descriptions I just ended up SKIPPING OVER because they were just… so… in your face, im so smart, look at me????? I mean, COME ON!

Kuang, you’re giving Hermoine Granger 😭 and trust me, I love Hermoine as much as the next HP fan, but come on! It truly makes me feel dumb cuz I have NO CLUE what you are talking about! Who tf is “Immanuel Kant”? “Jeremy Bentham”? “Russell”???? Am I fr expected to know who these people are?!? Im not a philosopher, im just a reader!!!

While yes, this book is VERY academic in nature, it reads like a boring paper, which was written by a college student who thinks their topic is EVERYTHING. I could do without. What I really wanted was for Alice and Peter to really come together. Also, this book is supposed to be “emotionally wrecking” I fail to see this coming to pass. The book felt like I was sitting in the audience during a debate. Boring.

This was basically a textbook. No grand scheme, no punchline, no real point to the entire thing. If it had one, I’d say it’s this: 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑡. Logic and reasoning is great and all, but…if thats the only reason behind your existence, then it’s really nothing at all. Researching your book content is great! Kudos! But this felt like I was in a lecture that never ended.

Thanks, but no. DNF at 30%.

... Read moreEven though 'Katabasis' didn't quite hit the mark for me personally, I totally get why people are drawn to its aesthetic, especially when searching for 'Katabasis R.F. Kuang art.' The book's premise alone, a journey into Hell steeped in dark academia, conjures up such vivid imagery. When I first saw the cover, and imagined what the art of this world would be like, I pictured something straight out of a gothic novel – think crumbling ancient ruins, shadowy libraries filled with old, dusty books, and statues of classical figures looming in the mist. It's the kind of vibe that makes you want to cozy up with a dark, mysterious read, even if the content itself didn't always grab me. The promise of a visually rich, intellectually stimulating world is a huge part of dark academia's appeal, and the 'Katabasis' concept definitely delivers on that front, even if the execution didn't quite land for my reading style. The OCR results of images associated with the book actually perfectly capture this aesthetic: the 'Katabasis' book cover itself, combined with gothic architecture and diagrams of Dante's Inferno, really sets the scene. It’s this visual storytelling that often draws us into dark academia in the first place, isn't it? The idea of delving into forbidden knowledge in atmospheric settings, surrounded by ancient texts and imposing historical backdrops. For those looking for 'Katabasis art,' I’d absolutely recommend exploring fan art communities online – platforms like Tumblr, Pinterest, or even dedicated bookstagram accounts often feature incredible interpretations that truly bring a story's mood to life. You might find artists who’ve envisioned the 'journey to the underworld' or the philosophical discussions in a way that’s visually stunning. Looking at different editions' covers or even just mood boards inspired by the themes of Hell and philosophy can be a great way to appreciate the visual side of the story, distinct from the reading experience itself. It’s fascinating how a book's concept can inspire so much creative visual output, regardless of individual reader experiences. And for those of you searching for 'Katabasis PDF,' I totally understand the desire to dive right into a new book without delay! While I can't recommend specific unauthorized sources, I always suggest checking your local library first. Many libraries now offer e-books through fantastic apps like Libby or OverDrive, which is a brilliant free way to access popular titles like this one. Not only is it convenient, but it also helps support libraries which are such vital community resources. Plus, there's nothing quite like holding a physical copy, feeling the pages, or for those who prefer to 'read' on the go, an audiobook can be a wonderful, immersive experience. Supporting authors by legally purchasing their work, whether it's an e-book or a physical copy from your favorite indie bookstore, is super important too! It ensures they can keep writing the stories we love (or sometimes, as in my case, DNF!). If you're hesitant after reading reviews like mine, borrowing from a library or trying a sample chapter is a great way to see if it's for you without committing financially. Happy reading, however you choose to explore your next literary adventure!
