On 15 August 1943, more than 34,000 American and Canadian troops launched Operation Cottage to recapture Kiska in Alaska's Aleutian Islands during World War II.

The Allies expected to face thousands of Japanese troops entrenched across the island.

But weeks earlier, Japan had secretly evacuated its Kiska garrison under cover of heavy fog.

When Allied troops landed, the enemy was already gone.

Yet the invasion still became deadly.

Dense fog, mines, booby traps, accidents and friendly-fire incidents caused Allied casualties as soldiers moved through abandoned Japanese positions expecting resistance.

USS Abner Read later struck a Japanese mine near Kiska, causing further casualties.

Operation Cottage became one of the strangest operations of World War II: tens of thousands of troops invaded an island where the enemy they expected to fight had already vanished.
