Nicholas Hoult’s very similar characters 🤔

Okay, so I've been a huge fan of Nicholas Hoult for ages, and I'm starting to see a really fascinating pattern in his more recent work! It's like he's become the go-to actor for characters who are constantly, almost hilariously, at the mercy of some 'overlooming force.' The OCR even picked up on this, highlighting how he always seems to be 'submitting to some overlooming force' – and honestly, it’s spot on! Take his role in *Renfield*, for example. His portrayal of Renfield, Dracula's long-suffering familiar, is just brilliant. He’s literally the ultimate 'whipping boy,' enduring endless abuse, both physical and psychological, from the Dark Lord himself. You can practically feel his exasperation and yearning for independence, even as he reluctantly carries out Dracula's increasingly bizarre demands. It’s a masterclass in comedic subservience, and he makes you root for him despite his questionable actions. The film really showcases his unique ability to play a character who is utterly trapped but still tries to find a glimmer of hope or agency. Then there’s his unforgettable performance in *The Menu*. Oh my goodness, the OCR mentioned him looking 'baffled' and being 'berating him' by the 'head chef,' and that scene where he’s signing the papers and looks completely bewildered? It immediately brought back memories of that incredible film. As Tyler, the food snob who is desperately trying to impress Chef Slowik, he embodies a different kind of submission – one driven by obsession and a desperate need for approval. He’s not physically bound like Renfield, but he's emotionally and intellectually enslaved by his own pretensions and the chef's overwhelming presence. The way his face contorts from smugness to pure terror and ultimately to a kind of resigned acceptance is just fantastic. He completely 'submits to Catherine' (or rather, the chef's vision) in the most unexpected way. It makes me wonder about his upcoming role in *Nosferatu*. Given the snippets in the OCR about it being 'his first vampire' (well, not quite, Renfield had vampires, but maybe his first classic vampire portrayal or direct interaction with the vampire), I'm intrigued to see if this 'submitting to an overlooming force' theme continues. Will he be playing another character caught in the thrall of a powerful, ancient being? My guess is there will be some element of vulnerability and perhaps even a touch of the 'whipping boy' dynamic, given the source material. He just seems to excel at these particular roles, doesn't he? Why does Nicholas Hoult keep getting cast, or choose, these types of roles? I think it's his incredible range within this specific niche. He has this amazing capacity to convey a spectrum of emotions – from genuine terror and frustration to bewildered acceptance and even a glimmer of defiance – all while being under the thumb of a more powerful entity. He's not just playing the same character; he's exploring different facets of subservience, vulnerability, and the human (or inhuman) response to overwhelming power. He hasn't 'branched out' in terms of escaping this archetype, but he's certainly deepened our understanding of it. It’s a testament to his acting prowess that he can make these seemingly similar characters feel fresh and engaging every single time. It's safe to say, I'm 'HOLTALOT' invested in seeing what he does next!
