What My White Mom Taught Me About Natural Hair 👧🏾👩🏻🎀

I'm adopted from Haiti by white people also known as Transracial Adoption and one of the most frequently asked questions I get is around hair care for individual’s of color within a white home. My hair love journey began as a child. My white adoptive mom stressed the importance of taking care of my hair for my own confidence and wellbeing.

Growing up she made an effort to style my hair, took me to a wonderful black hair stylist when needed, and built a relationship with the local black beauty supply. Over time these things helped me learn to manage my hair. Eventually, I went to cosmetology school and I develop a passion for hair care which I still do today through my volunteer project, The Hair Closet which provides ethnic-friendly hair products and tools to women and children of color within foster/adoptive homes, homeless shelters and after-school programs.

It’s important for foster and adoptive parents to educate themselves on how to properly care for natural hair and to be gentle and patient with the hair care journey. Let's work together to create a safe and supportive environment for women and children with natural hair.

🌸 What questions do you have?

For white adoptive parents, it's crucial to understand the distinctive needs of natural hair. This can involve learning about different hairstyles, appropriate products, and the significance of representation in hair care. Schools and community support groups often provide resources on the cultural aspects of managing ethnic hair. Engaging with local black hairstylists, attending workshops, and connecting with the natural hair community online can greatly enhance your understanding. Brands focusing on natural hair care are evolving, offering a wider range of products suitable for all curl patterns. It's crucial to select products that nourish rather than strip away essential moisture. Emphasizing a holistic approach to hair care—focusing not just on aesthetics but also on health—can foster a child's self-esteem and cultural pride. We should celebrate diversity in hair types as part of the beautiful spectrum of identity. In conclusion, the journey of learning about natural hair care is ongoing and vital. It requires an open mind, commitment to education, and willingness to embrace the rich cultural history that natural hair represents. A supportive environment fosters confidence and helps children thrive in their own skin.

Running an online thrift store taught us a lot.
Most secondhand systems weren’t built to support real bodies or real sizing variance, so we stopped doing things the “normal” way. * We measure every piece while ignoring tag sizes. * We built a measurement-based size chart that works across brands, eras, and bodies. * We over-communicate on l
