Northrup Falls
Hey nature lovers! I recently had the most incredible adventure exploring Northrup Falls in Tennessee, and I just had to share all the details with you. If you're anything like me and always on the hunt for breathtaking natural beauty, this spot needs to be on your radar. Getting there was part of the fun. Northrup Falls is located within the Colditz Cove State Natural Area, near Jamestown, TN. It's a bit off the beaten path, which honestly, just adds to its charm. I used my GPS to navigate to the Colditz Cove trailhead parking lot. Make sure your tank is full, as cell service can be spotty in the rural areas leading up to it – better to download your maps beforehand! The parking area itself is pretty straightforward, and from there, the adventure begins. The hike to Northrup Falls isn't overly strenuous, but it's definitely a proper trail, so wear sturdy shoes! I'd rate it as moderate, mainly because of some uneven terrain and a few uphill sections. The path winds through a beautiful forest, and you'll immediately feel immersed in nature. The sounds of birds and rustling leaves were my constant companions. One of the coolest things about this trail is the opportunity to walk behind the waterfall! It's such a unique experience and definitely a highlight. You can feel the mist on your face as you stand in the rock shelter, gazing out through the curtain of water. It's truly magical. Speaking of the falls, Northrup Falls is a spectacular 60-foot plunge waterfall. The sheer sandstone bluff it tumbles over is impressive, and the water collects in a clear pool below. Even on a warm day, the air near the falls feels wonderfully cool and refreshing. It’s a perfect spot to sit for a while, pack a picnic, and just soak in the tranquility. For anyone planning a visit, here are a few tips based on my trip: Gear Up: Good hiking boots are a must. Also, bring plenty of water, especially if you go during warmer months. A snack or a packed lunch is a great idea too, to enjoy by the falls. Best Time to Visit: I went in spring, and the wildflowers were blooming, and the water flow was fantastic. Fall would also be stunning with the changing leaves. Summer is lovely for cooling off, but be mindful of bugs. Leave No Trace: Please pack out everything you pack in! Let’s keep this beautiful natural area pristine for everyone to enjoy. Safety First: Stick to marked trails. While the hike isn't super difficult, it's always good to be aware of your surroundings and any slippery spots, especially near the waterfall. Northrup Falls isn't just a waterfall; it's an experience. It’s a place where you can disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature. I left feeling refreshed, invigorated, and so grateful for Tennessee's incredible natural landscapes. If you get the chance, go! You won't regret it.
