Grief in an #openrelationship isn't a sign that the "tables have turned" in a negative way; it’s a testament to the value of the bond you’re protecting. By leaning into the grief rather than fighting it, you allow the relationship to evolve into its next chapter.

... Read moreIn my experience with open relationships, I found that grief is a surprisingly common yet rarely talked about emotion. When a partner starts a new serious relationship, it can feel like the dynamics you once relied on shift dramatically. It’s not jealousy but a deep sense of losing the unique closeness and routine you shared. For example, I used to cherish being the sole comforter, the one they turned to first whenever things got tough. Suddenly, that role changes, which can bring on feelings of sadness and confusion. One crucial insight is understanding that grief and joy can coexist. It’s entirely natural to be happy for your partner’s new connection while mourning the loss of your previous dynamic. For me, journaling helped tremendously—I would write letters expressing what I was feeling and then share them with my partner during calm, scheduled conversations. This approach prevented overwhelming constant discussions and let me process my emotions more clearly. Additionally, reaching out to an impartial third party, like a therapist or a close friend not involved in the relationship, can provide valuable perspectives and emotional support. They helped me untangle the layers of grief that weren’t about the new partner but about adjusting to change itself. Recognizing the grief as part of the transition allowed me to lean into those feelings instead of suppressing them. It wasn’t a sign of failure or negativity but a testament to the significance of the connection I valued. This mindset shift made it easier to embrace the evolving nature of open relationships and polyamory, fostering growth and deeper understanding rather than fear or resentment.
