Not celebrating thanksgiving
This was my Thanksgiving last year, time with my niblings and dad in his rehab facility. I cannot express the happiness I felt in these moments. My niblings bring me so much joy, and the joy my dad experiences seeing them could bring me to tears.
Since my dad died in March I have dreaded every holiday and milestone. With Thanksgiving looming ever nearer I made the decision this year to not celebrate. I know dad would love to be here and celebrate, but I also know my favorite part of the holidays was spending time with him on the couch after eating ourselves full and falling asleep on his shoulder watching football. I’m 26, and that is still my favorite part of Thanksgiving, and because he is not here I am not ready to have one more immense feeling of loss this year. I know it’ll happen, but this year I just want Thanksgiving to be another day.
The next week I have finals and that’s how I’ve justified my decision, but if I am being honest it is truly because I am just not ready, and that’s okay.
