The Reality of Caring for Livestock in the Frigid

True stewardship doesn't stop when the temperature drops. Out here in the freezing cold, we make sure every animal is warm, fed, and cared for with the same kindness you'd give a pet. It’s more than just farm work; it’s doing right by the creatures God put in our care.
Having spent several winters managing livestock in subzero temperatures, I can attest that caring for animals in the cold requires more than just routine feeding. Maintaining warmth is critical; proper shelter with windbreaks and deep bedding, such as straw, helps keep animals comfortable and prevents cold-related illnesses like frostbite or pneumonia. Water availability is equally important — sources can freeze quickly, so using heated waterers or breaking ice regularly ensures animals stay hydrated. Additionally, nutritional needs increase during cold spells since animals expend more energy to maintain body heat. Providing higher-calorie feed and monitoring body condition are essential practices. Beyond physical needs, a compassionate mindset inspired by values like those in Proverbs 12:10 transforms livestock care from mere farm chores into a stewardship mission. Treating animals with dignity and tenderness, much like you would a pet, strengthens the bond between caretaker and creature and leads to healthier, more productive livestock. In my experience, the key is preparation and constant vigilance. Early preparation before winter hits, combined with daily attention to each animal’s well-being, ensures they endure the cold safely. Through such care, one truly honors the responsibility entrusted to us for the lives of these animals, even in the harshest conditions.
