My understanding of this verse is that the "light" is God's way to reveal and impart life through Jesus Christ to mankind and the light will always remain shining for eternity. Because of ignorance and sinfulness many people don't see or understand the way of Christ (the darkness). Those who prefer the darkness will not see it for what it is.
