Crabbing time!

Starting crabbing season is always exciting, and this time around, it was a mix of good catches and unexpected boat troubles. Catching crabs early in the season is rewarding, especially when you find spots with active crab populations. I’ve found that prepping your gear meticulously before heading out is crucial—not just for catching crabs but also to avoid equipment mishaps. In our recent trip, the boat trailer wheel coming off twice was a real hassle. From my experience, it’s essential to regularly inspect the trailer’s wheels, nuts, and bearings before launching. Carrying a basic repair kit including wrenches, spare nuts, and a jack can save a lot of time if something goes wrong. Also, using wheel locks or safety clips on your trailer wheels adds an extra layer of security. For successful crabbing, pay attention to tide times and local crab activity. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be the best for baiting crab pots or traps. Using fresh bait like fish heads or chicken remains attracts more crabs. Patience is key—they can be shy at first but checking traps periodically increases your haul. Overall, despite the trailer issues, the satisfaction of pulling in a good catch more than made up for it. These experiences taught me the importance of preparation, vigilance in equipment checks, and adaptability when things don’t go as planned.
