So, watching my ball python devour a rat is always a highlight for me! It might sound a bit intense to some, but it’s such a natural and crucial part of keeping these amazing reptiles healthy. I wanted to share a bit about my feeding routine and what I’ve learned over the years to ensure my snake stays happy and well-fed. First things first, safety is paramount. I always opt for frozen/thawed (F/T) rats to prevent any potential injuries to my ball python from live prey. My routine starts the night before feeding day: I take the rat out of the freezer and let it slowly thaw in the refrigerator. Then, about an hour or so before I plan to feed, I’ll place the thawed rat in a sealed plastic bag and submerge it in warm (but never hot!) water. The goal is to bring the rat up to a natural body temperature, mimicking a freshly caught prey item. It’s super important not to microwave it, as that can create dangerous hot spots that could harm your snake internally. When it’s showtime, I always use long feeding tongs. This isn’t just for my safety, but it also prevents my ball python from associating my hand with food. I gently wiggle the rat by its tail, trying to make it look as lifelike as possible. Sometimes my snake strikes immediately, other times it takes a few wiggles to get her attention! It’s truly fascinating to watch their innate hunting instincts kick in. Once she strikes, she’ll typically coil tightly around the rat, performing her powerful constriction. This is a completely natural and mesmerizing behavior. After a minute or two, she’ll start the slow process of 'walking' her jaw around the rat, usually beginning headfirst. It’s a very deliberate and patient act, and during this time, I make sure to leave her completely undisturbed. Any interruption could cause stress or even lead to regurgitation, which we definitely want to avoid. After she’s successfully finished her meal, it’s crucial not to handle her for at least 24 to 48 hours. This allows her ample time to digest her food properly. I also ensure that her enclosure maintains the correct temperature and humidity levels, as a warm environment is essential for effective digestion. A cozy, warm hide is her favorite spot to 'cook' her food post-meal. Choosing the right size rat is also very important. A good rule of thumb I follow is that the prey item should be no wider than the widest part of my snake's body. For younger ball pythons, I start with smaller fuzzy or hopper rats, gradually increasing the size as they grow. Feeding too large a prey item can not only be difficult for them to eat but can also lead to regurgitation, which is very stressful for them and can set back their feeding schedule. Occasionally, my ball python might refuse a meal. When this happens, I don't panic! There could be several reasons – she might be going into shed, her environment might have changed slightly, or she might just not be hungry. I usually wait about a week and try again. Patience is definitely a virtue when it comes to keeping these beautiful creatures. Overall, watching my ball python feed is a profoundly rewarding experience. It connects me to their wild nature and helps ensure they thrive under my care. Every snake has its own unique personality, even around food, so observing and learning your individual snake's cues is a big part of the fun in reptile keeping!
