Proper care of ball pythons is crucial for their well-being. When setting up their tank, it's vital to use a suitable size based on the snake's age: hatchlings should be housed in a 10-gallon tank, juveniles in a 20-40 gallon, and adults require at least a 4x2x2 PVC enclosure. Ensure the tank has adequate hides, a water bowl, and a mix of clutter like plants and climbing objects to create a secure environment. Feeding is another essential aspect. For young ball pythons (0-12 months), feed them 10%-15% of their body weight every 5-7 days. As they mature (12-24 months), adjust to up to 7% of their weight every 14-20 days. Adult snakes can be fed every 20-30 days, but it's crucial to monitor their weight and adjust meal sizes accordingly. Temperature and humidity levels also play a significant role in their care. The warm side of the enclosure should be maintained between 88-94 degrees Fahrenheit, with a basking spot of 96-100 degrees. The cooler side should range from mid-70s to high 80s, while humidity levels should be around 60%, increasing to 70-80% during shedding periods. When introducing a new ball python, inspect for health issues and allow them to acclimate in their enclosure for at least a week before handling. Regular gentle handling (1-2 times a week) will help them become accustomed to you. Always handle them by supporting the thickest part of their body and remain calm to ensure a positive interaction.
