... Read moreGirl, I totally get where you're coming from about wanting to restore your hair and debating a big chop! As a fellow 4C natural, I've had those exact same thoughts, especially when dealing with maintenance after protective styles like braids. It's a real journey, and you're so right – health truly trumps length every single time. But healthy hair often leads to length, right?
After years of trial and error, asking around, and doing my own research, I've definitely found some amazing hair oils that have been a game-changer for my 4C hair growth and overall health. You asked what we use, so let me spill my top picks and how I incorporate them into my routine. These aren't just about making your hair shiny; they're about creating a healthy scalp environment and strengthening your strands from the root up.
My Go-To Hair Oils for 4C Growth & Health:
Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO): This is practically a staple in the 4C community, and for good reason! I personally swear by it for stimulating my scalp and adding thickness. It's quite viscous, so I usually warm it up slightly and massage it directly into my scalp a few times a week, especially along my edges. The thickness really helps protect fragile strands and promotes circulation.
Rosemary Essential Oil (Diluted!): This one has gained a lot of buzz, and I can confirm it's effective! Rosemary oil is fantastic for stimulating hair follicles and increasing blood flow. Crucially, never use essential oils directly on your scalp. I always mix a few drops (2-3) into a carrier oil like jojoba, almond, or even my JBCO before massaging it in. It gives a lovely tingling sensation and makes my scalp feel super refreshed.
Jojoba Oil: This is probably my favorite carrier oil because it closely mimics our scalp's natural sebum. It's lightweight, non-greasy, and excellent for balancing scalp oil production. I use it to seal moisture into my strands after applying leave-in conditioner, and it's also a great base for diluting essential oils like rosemary or peppermint. It helps keep my scalp moisturized without feeling heavy.
Peppermint Essential Oil (Diluted!): Similar to rosemary, peppermint oil is another powerful stimulant. When diluted with a carrier oil, it provides an invigorating sensation that can wake up dormant follicles. I alternate between rosemary and peppermint in my scalp massages – both have helped with noticeable growth.
Avocado Oil: This rich, nutrient-dense oil is fantastic for sealing moisture into my hair. It's packed with vitamins A, D, E, and B, and fatty acids that really penetrate and nourish 4C strands. I use it as part of my L.O.C. (liquid, oil, cream) method or as a pre-poo treatment to soften and protect my hair before shampooing.
How I Integrate Oils for Maximum Growth:
Scalp Massages: This is key! I make sure to do a dedicated scalp massage with my chosen growth oil blend (like JBCO with a few drops of rosemary) at least 3-4 times a week for about 5-10 minutes. Consistent blood flow to the scalp is vital for encouraging growth.
Pre-Poo Treatments: Before washing, I'll saturate my hair with a mix of avocado oil and sometimes a bit of coconut oil, letting it sit for 30 minutes to an hour (or even overnight). This helps protect my hair from the stripping effects of shampoo and makes detangling much easier.
Sealing Moisture: After my wash day routine, once my hair is damp and I've applied my leave-in conditioner, I use a lighter oil like jojoba or argan to seal in all that good moisture. This is especially important for 4C hair, which tends to lose moisture quickly.
Beyond just oils, remember that protecting your hair, especially as a 'braider girl,' is super important. When you take down your braids, be incredibly gentle. Deep condition regularly, drink lots of water, and try to minimize heat. It's all about consistency and really listening to what your hair needs. You've got this – your healthy hair journey is just beginning!
