3 reasons to mark up your books 🖍️

I am a huge fan of marking in your books. There are so many benefits to it.

1. It helps you engage with the book.

It’s so easy to read a book an autopilot! Try to avoid this as much as possible.

2. It helps you remember the book.

It’s so easy to forget what we read. By marking up your book, you have a much better chance of actually retaining the book. You found value in starting to read it, now it’s time to make sure you remember it.

3. It points out information to find later.

This is key if you need to remember quotes or bits of information you can use later. Who knows when that analogy, case study, or emotional quote will be just what you need, and it’s better to have quick access to it.

How about you? Do you mark up your books or keep them clean?

... Read moreI used to be so hesitant about writing in my books. I mean, who wants to 'deface' a beautiful new paperback or a cherished hardcover? But once I embraced the idea of actively marking my books, my entire reading world changed. It's not just about engaging more; it's about making the book truly mine and extracting every bit of value from it. If you're wondering how to mark your books effectively without feeling like you're ruining them, let me share some of my go-to techniques and tips. First off, let's talk tools. You don't need anything fancy! For highlighting, I love using pastel highlighters because they're gentler on the eyes and don't bleed through thin pages as much as brighter, darker ones. For notes, a fine-point pen or a mechanical pencil works wonders. Pencils are great for initial reads as they can be erased, while pens offer permanence for thoughts you want to solidify. Sometimes I even use different colored pens to categorize my notes – one color for questions, another for key definitions, and perhaps a third for personal reflections. This visual system really helps when I revisit the book later. When it comes to what to mark, I've developed a few personal guidelines. I always highlight passages that resonate deeply with me or contain a core argument. If there's a strong, quotable line, it gets a highlight and maybe even a star in the margin. For more complex ideas or sections I want to revisit, I'll underline them. But the real magic happens in the margins. This is where I jot down my thoughts, questions, connections to other books or real-life experiences, or even arguments against the author's point. These handwritten notes are invaluable because they capture my immediate intellectual and emotional responses, making the book a dialogue between me and the author. I also find it incredibly helpful to use a simple system of symbols. A question mark for something I don't understand or want to research further, an exclamation mark for a surprising insight, and maybe an 'R' for something I need to remember or review. This helps categorize information at a glance, directly supporting the original article's point about finding information later. When I'm looking for specific details or a powerful quote for a project, these markers guide me straight to what I need. Don't feel pressured to mark every page or highlight every sentence. The goal isn't to turn your book into a rainbow, but to make your interaction with the text more meaningful. Over-highlighting can be just as counterproductive as not marking at all, as it makes everything seem important, and nothing stands out. I try to be selective, only marking what truly stands out or sparks a thought. One final tip: consider marking your books in layers. Your first read might involve light highlighting and a few margin notes. On a re-read, you might add deeper reflections or connect new insights. This iterative process allows your understanding to evolve with the book. Embracing these simple book marking techniques hasn't just improved my retention; it's made reading an even richer, more active, and profoundly personal experience. Give it a try, and you might just find your new favorite way to read!
