My photography journey

Starting my photography journey has been such an incredible adventure, and looking back at these photos makes me so proud of how far I've come! When I first picked up a camera, I was just trying to capture pretty scenes, but now I'm thinking more about composition, lighting, and telling a story. For anyone else out there just beginning, my biggest advice would be to just *shoot*. Don't wait for the perfect gear; use what you have and practice constantly. You’d be surprised what you can achieve with just a phone camera or a basic DSLR. One of my favorite things to photograph is people in their element. Whether it's a candid shot of a friend casually leaning against a chain-link fence on a tennis court, or capturing the shared smiles of two young women wearing graduation caps sitting back-to-back, there's something magical about freezing those moments in time. I've learned so much about natural light, especially when shooting outdoors. Golden hour, like when I took that selfie on the sandy beach at sunset, truly makes everything glow. It's amazing how a simple shift in time and position can transform a photograph. I also love the challenge of shooting indoors or in shaded areas, learning to manipulate available light. That shot of a young woman with dreadlocks against a red curtain background really taught me about isolating a subject. I've also been experimenting with different settings and props. From the serene solitude of a young woman in a white dress by a lake to the cozy, relaxed feel of an outdoor armchair setup with books and a lamp, each location offers unique opportunities for creativity. When you're composing a shot, think about what's in the foreground and background. Sometimes, less is more, letting your subject be the star. Capturing the pride of a 2024 graduate, with their black and white stole, is a powerful reminder of celebrating milestones. It’s all about anticipating those authentic emotions and telling a visual story. Editing has also become a crucial part of my process. I started with basic adjustments, but now I'm exploring more advanced techniques to enhance colors and bring out details without making the photos look unnatural. It's a fine balance! For portraits, I focus on gentle skin retouching and making the eyes sparkle. For landscapes, I might play with contrast and saturation to emphasize the mood of the scene. Don't be afraid to experiment with different editing styles to find what resonates with your personal vision. I'm always looking for new inspiration and ways to improve. Connecting with other photographers, whether online or in person, has been super helpful. We can share feedback, learn new tricks, and even discover new perspectives on common subjects.
