Must-Watch Halloween Movies 👻

1. Terrifier 3, 2024

⭐️Rate: 8/10

🎬Review: If scary movies aren't your thing, chances are that you are likely going to hate this thin, blood-soaked piece of independed cinema. But if you are a fan of traditional slasher flicks with creative kills and satisfying performances, this might just become your favourite one so far.

There isn't too much going on in the film plot-wise. In fact, a description of Terrifier 3's plot wouldn't be much longer than a summary of one Friends episode. Instead of answering the questions from the previous installment, the movie just brings up even more questions for the now-confirmed sequel, which may unsatisfy some fans, but at the same time already creates hype for Terrifier 4.

2. Smile 2, 2024

⭐️Rate: 8/10

🎬Review: I just watched the movie at a premiere here in my country and i was pleasantly surprised by this actress: Naomi Scott!

Her acting was top notch!! Her screams, her grimaces were so good, her acting was very convincing!! The movie is a little bit slow but it is not boring! It has very brutal and gory scenes when the killings happened! The gory effects were scary and not for a weak stomach!

The opening scene of the movie was chaotically filmed but in a good way, Kyle Gallner's small role was perfect! And oh boy..poor guy!(I don't want to do a spoiler but..yeah, poor guy) The musical part of the movie(yes, it has little musical scenes miles better than what we saw in Joker 2) were pretty cool with some good songs! Well, my opinion? I like it!! A little bit slow at some parts but it was a very decent sequel!! It deserves your attention and go and see it on a big screen!! Not for kids, definitely! Some really brutal scenes in the movie!!

3. Scream, 1996

⭐️Rate: 10/10

🎬Review: Scream single-handedly revitalized the slasher genre, which was beyond dead as of 1996, and inspired countless spin-offs and attempted remakes in its wake. Wes Craven creates yet another horror masterpiece, and does so in an original and unique way. Add in the witty, self aware, reference-filled script by Kevin Williamson, which was rumored to have taken influence from Friday the 13th Pt 6, and you have one of the most iconic slashers ever made. Arguably the greatest opening scene to a horror movie ever, along with so many more iconic lines and scenes (Randy watching Halloween on the couch). The acting is next level by horror/slasher standards and has a very likable cast. Skeet Ulrich giving his best performance of his career, Matthew Lillard, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Drew Barrymore... do i need to go on? The influence and impact Scream had on the late 90's is undeniable, simply one of the best scary movies of all time.

4. Hannibal, 2001

⭐️Rate: 7/10

🎬Review: For the most part, I enjoyed this film. I was engaged throughout and that's what you want from a film. However, I found myself frustrated with some of the nonsensical choices of the characters.

Hopkins was as brilliant as ever. This Hannibal was a lot more ruthless but just as cunning, perceptive and observant. I really like Julian Moore as an actress but I'm just not sure she was right for this role as a shoe-in for the character of Clarice. I don't know if it was because I was comparing her to Jodie Foster's Clarice, but it just felt like two completely different characters.

She wasn't as intellectual, sharp or astute as the original Clarice. She felt a lot more vulnerable than the original Clarice. And she made some questionable decisions throughout the film to say the least. Lastly, WHAT happened to the southern twang in her accent, yes your accent can change over the ten years that passed but there wasn't even a trace of it!

This film overall was an interesting, further insight into Hannibal's character and also the relationship between Hannibal and Clarice, and his matured fondness for her. Overall, this film is definitely worth watching with some memorable scenes, but just don't go into it expecting it to be Silence of the lambs part 2.

5. Saw, 2004

⭐️Rate: 9/10

🎬Review: There has been an effort in recent years to academically analyze "Saw", injecting a false connotation on to the film. One scholarly article points to the "militarization" of Jigsaw in a post-9/11 world. Jigsaw, like the military, carries out violent acts, but has found ways to rationalize them with moral justifications (saving the worthy, letting the undeserving die). The author makes various other parallels about a "military" setting, mentioning IEDs and the industrial setting of Jigsaw's workshop. I find this to be largely silly, and not at all the creators' intention. I see a much more obvious line of progression from "Silence of the Lambs" to "Seven" to "Saw" with the advent of the brilliant, self-moralizing serial killer. Even Hitchcock's "Rope" offered a justification for murder, albeit a poor one. Terrorism or not, the horror film will go on.

... Read moreHalloween is the perfect time to gather with friends and enjoy some spine-tingling movies. In addition to the films mentioned, classics like Halloween (1978) and The Exorcist (1973) continue to terrify audiences year after year. Recent trends show that horror films are innovating through unique narratives that blend traditional slasher elements with psychological thrills. For those seeking a chill, consider watching Hocus Pocus (1993) for a lighter, humorous take on the holiday, or delve into modern masterpieces like Get Out (2017), which reimagines horror with social commentary. Horror is thriving on streaming platforms as well, bringing new films like Blair Witch (2016) and a variety of international scares to a wider audience. With new releases and beloved classics, you can create the ultimate Halloween movie marathon that scares and entertains. What's on your watchlist this spooky season? Don't forget to share your favorites in the comments!
