My Stairwell Fart Caused Chaos

Let me just say… this was NOT how I expected my morning to go. I had my usual protein shake, and it gave me serious bubble guts. On my way up the stairs to my office, I let out a huge fart — like one of those warm, awful ones you immediately regret.

A little later, our SVP of HR walked in and apparently got a full face of it. She genuinely thought something had died in the building. Next thing I know, facilities is involved, giant blower fans are set up, HVAC is called to inspect the ducts, and Orkin shows up because they were convinced a rodent crawled into the walls and died.

And the whole time… it was literally just my protein-shake disaster lingering in the stairwell. I’ve never wanted to disappear more.

What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve accidentally caused at work?

... Read moreIt’s amazing how one simple act, like letting out a fart in a stairwell, can quickly escalate into a full-blown office emergency. Farts, especially those triggered by foods or drinks high in protein, can produce strong odors that linger and cause significant discomfort for others around. Protein shakes, while great for fitness enthusiasts, often contain ingredients such as whey or soy that can upset the digestive system, leading to what's commonly called “bubble guts.” In workplaces, unexpected odors can be taken very seriously. This story highlights how a single stairwell fart was mistaken for something much worse, prompting involvement from multiple departments like HVAC technicians and even Orkin pest control. When an unpleasant smell is detected, it's natural for staff to suspect serious issues such as dead animals or mold, especially if the source is unknown. This incident also underscores how important it is to maintain open communication about workplace cleanliness and building maintenance. While embarrassing for the person involved, it’s a reminder that these human moments happen to everyone and can build camaraderie when shared humorously. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, it helps to stay calm and maybe even laugh it off—the office environment thrives on authenticity and real-life experiences just like this one. Sharing embarrassing work stories is a great way for colleagues to relate and bond, reducing stress and improving workplace culture. So next time your protein shake doesn’t agree with you, maybe take the elevator instead of the stairs!
